For Sale: 1967 Ford Mustang in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

In the world of pony cars, there are plenty of classics that have great street presence. And then there are cars, like this sweet Ford Mustang, that are wicked manifestations of high octane and pure adrenaline! Believed to be one of only 15 GT500E convertibles built by Unique Performance, this killer drop-top could be the ultimate Eleanor Shelby. With one twist of its key, 410 cubic inches of Windsor V8 roars to life, shattering any thinly veiled subtlety into a million pieces. When its rubber bites the pavement, a custom suspension and beefy Tremec 5-speed afford a steady diet of modern performance poseurs that's seasoned with the occasional golden age cruiser. And if you're looking for some pedigreed metal that crosses legendary heritage with fresh DNA, it's the stuff your dreams are made of!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Like so many things modern-era Shelby, the story of Unique Performance builds is a bit of a convoluted tale. But, like so many things classic-era Shelby, that story is part of what makes the cars so cool and so collectable. Back in 2001, Shelby authorized the Dallas-area firm to build 400 GT500Es and 75 GT500E Super Snakes. Unfortunately, Unique Performance experienced major financial strain, and only 120 GT500Es made it out of the hole. Scheduled for a six month build, this Shelby was delayed for eight additional months. That 14-month gestation debuted the car in late 2007, a mere six weeks prior to Unique's official shutdown. And today, sporting a fresh paint job that dresses glossy Pepper Gray 2-stage in Metallic Black stripes, this Ford rolls as one of the coolest, fastest, most lust worthy and most exclusive Mustangs on the planet!

With excellent performance, youthful aesthetics and a strict regimen of maintenance that's been guided by one meticulous owner, this Shelby could be considered a brilliant bundle of showroom-fresh aggression. At the front of the car, an Eleanor-style fascia founds classy billet grilles behind PIAA fog lights, PIAA driving lamps and modern halogen headlights. At the top of that fascia, polished lanyards pin an aggressive hood in front of fresh glass that's framed in straight trim, polished wipers and bullet-style mirrors. At the sides of those lanyards, Shelby fender caps, rowdy side pipes and a Monza-style faux fuel filler cage traditional door handles, smooth GT500E callouts and vivid GT500E fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a cloth top centers a glass backlite above a color-keyed bumper, a lightweight decklid, PIAA reverse lamps and traditional Shelby taillights that frame a third GT500E emblem.

ENGINE

Hoist the car's angular hood and you'll find 410 cubic inches of Ford small block that twists stout 11 to 1 compression into big horsepower and gobs of stump-pulling torque! Beginning life as a 351 cubic inch Windsor motor, that cast iron mill was professionally assembled by Keith Craft Performance Engines of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. At the top of the bored block, polished K&N breathers funnel wind in to an 8-stack intake that's wired to FAST fuel injection and an Auto Gage pressure gauge. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way to free-breathing Edelbrock heads, which prop polished breathers on polished, Shelby-branded valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences spark between an MSD Blaster HVC coil, MSD 6AL ignition and loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires. A hydraulic roller cam pushes gases through coated shorty headers. A polished Be Cool radiator centers a large SPAL puller fan between a Ford water pump and Canton expansion tank. A bright Concept One serpentine drive spins a coated AC compressor and modern power steering beneath a polished Powermaster alternator. And details like trick dipsticks, a polished master cylinder, aftermarket brace bars and polished Unique Performance caps look right at home in the car's textured engine bay.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

At the bottom of this Mustang, a freshened undercarriage houses solid, undercoated floors that are bolted to a roster of top-notch components. Behind the Windsor, a RAM hydraulic clutch engages a tough Tremec TKO600 5-speed. That gearbox twists an aluminum driveshaft, which is threaded to a 9-inch Currie third member that's finished with Currie axles, a Truetrac differential and big, 3.50 gears. That rear end rolls on a tailored Unique Performance suspension, which follows an upgraded coil-over front-clip that's built around Total Control Products power rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is equally class, with beefy calipers, "SHELBY" branded Baers up front, clenching four drilled and slotted rotors. Hand-fabricated by Unique Performance, the car's 2.5-inch exhaust employs throaty SpinTech mufflers. Torque shakes the ground through machined blades, which twist polished spinners inside two 245/40ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As and two 275/40ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As. And finishing touches include a deep oil pan and a large fuel cell.

INTERIOR

Open the doors and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that mixes the best elements of Ford's Black vinyl interior with many stylish and functional upgrades. Front-and-center, Shelby-branded buckets stretch tight leather covers under a tough roll bar. In front of those seats, an ornate, dual-cowl dash centers Shelby-branded telemetry and a requisite Shelby signature above modern air conditioning and modern Sony audio. Below that dash, a small Shelby shifter floats a themed nitrous button above a polished fire extinguisher, metal Shelby foot pedals and clean Shelby floor mats. In front of the driver, a polished and wood-rimmed steering wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a clean trunk anchors a bright nitrous tank next to a billet-trimmed Optima battery.
