Vehicle Description
We've featured some amazing Corvette pro-tourers over the past few
years. And this LSX-powered drop-top is the latest in a long line
of metal that seems to come in, spend one week being universally
admired, and disappear to a new home. By definition, pro-touring
resto-mods are virtually irresistible because they combine
everything great about modern performance with everything loved in
vintage style. And who doesn't enjoy cruising a classic that mixes
the best attributes of old school Detroit muscle with the killer
performance of modern American icons? As a professionally built
custom that delivers on every level, this sweet Sting Ray is the
kind of car you simply CAN'T ignore. It wraps a custom chassis, a
modern transmission and 427 cubic inches of LSX small block in a
tasteful restoration which oozes the kind of style that made
second-generation Corvettes the stuff of legend. If you're looking
for an impressive classic that'll fare well on the road AND at the
show, check out this awesome Chevy!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Lean, mean, timeless and classy, this C2 was subjected to a
ground-up, 6-figure restoration that was completed in late 2016.
That transformation from proven classic to brutal pro-touring
resto-mod, initiated by the legends at Roadster Shop, married a
solid composite shell with custom quarters and quality Haartz
Stayfast cloth. With those modifications in place, rich black
2-stage put the icing on the cake. And today, this top notch
drop-top rolls as a spectacular piece of iconic American muscle
that's detailed to better-than-new standards.
Aggressive styling wrapped in aggressive paint is one thing. But,
for this Vette to be completely over-the-top, the restorers added a
full roster of fresh, handpicked details. At the front of the car,
quality Detroit Speed headlights shade polished bumpers, which cage
a stainless-trimmed grille between small parking lamps. Behind
those lights, a stylish Stinger Hood plants a bright red stripe in
front of pristine glass that's seated in polished frames and
cleared by Detroit Speed Selecta-Speed wipers. At the sides of that
hood, a louvered profile centers polished handles and a familiar
driver's mirror above rowdy side-pipes. And that mirror reflects
1.5-inch wider quarters, which flow in to more polished bumpers,
factory taillights and an ornate cross-flag fuel filler.
ENGINE
Gaze upon this Chevy's compact engine bay and you'll find 427 cubic
inches of small block fury! Officially known as the Southern
Performance Systems Super ProStreet LSX 427, that $20,250 crate
engine creates a killer 670 horsepower. At the top of the block, an
Accel filter element feeds a polished air tube, which funnels wind
through a proven LS3 throttle body to a lightweight LS3 intake. At
the edges of that intake, LS3 rails pump 42 pounds of fuel through
LS3 injectors. Air and fuel meet spark in rectangular-port LS3
heads, which hide Super ProStreet Series dual springs under Katech
valve covers and Katech-located Corvette coils. Beneath those
heads, a Callies 4340 crank pushes Callies 4340 H-beams and forged
Mahle pistons between a high performance cam and hydraulic LS3
roller lifters. Spent gases exit through custom Stainless Works
headers while Concept One serpentine components spin a polished
alternator opposite a polished AC compressor. There's a big DeWitts
radiator that hangs a duo of puller fans between TIG welded coolant
tubes. Lubrication is provided by a high-volume oil pump, which
milks a 6.5-quart Holden oil pan. Communication is handled by a
custom wiring harness and custom ECM programming. And a high-torque
starter, a Wilwood master cylinder and MSD Super Conductor plug
wires combine with a faux carbon fiber cowl to round out the
details.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Park this Sting Ray on a lift and you'll find a $32,357 Roadster
Shop FAST TRACK chassis that's founded on 10-gauge, fully boxed
frames rails. That spry skeleton rides a fully independent FAST
TRACK suspension, which mixes C6 Corvette hubs and C6 Corvette
spindles with Penske coil-overs and a 1.25-inch splined sway bar
that's finished with C6 Corvette links. Behind the stout small
block, a billet flywheel leads a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch,
which kicks a Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed that's wrapped in a
QuickTime bellhousing. That transmission twists a 9-inch Strange
third-member, which spins 3.89 gears and a Truetrac limited-slip
differential between 31-spline Strange axles. Turns come courtesy
of power rack-and-pinion steering. Smooth and solid stops are
provided by Wilwood 6 and 4-piston calipers, which squeeze 13-inch
drilled and slotted rotors. Exhaust roars through oversized
side-pipes, which wrap crisp ceramic coating around amped Auger
inserts. And Boze Clutch wheels, which spin 245/40ZR18 BF Goodrich
g-Force Sports in front of 285/35ZR19 BF Goodrich g-Force Sports,
are a nice finishing touch to the chassis' aggressive, lowered
stance.
INTERIOR
Slip in to this roadster's vivid cockpit and settle on heated
bucket seats that are stuffed with cushy Al Knoch foam and wrapped
in smooth Al Knoch leather. A dual-cowl dash founds Dakota Digital
VHX telemetry above Vintage Air conditioning and a custom,
Clarion-led audio system. That Bluetooth-enabled system bumps dual
tweeters, dual 4-inch speakers, dual 6-inch speakers and dual
10-inch subwoofers. A custom, leather-wrapped console centers a
billet Bowler shifter in front of modern power windows. Below that
console, Sting Ray-themed floor mats split the difference between
billet foot pedals and clean carpet. And in front of the driver, a
stylish Billet Specialties steering wheel laps a tilting
column.
