Vehicle Description

1963 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet VIN 159539

Completed October 22, 1963

Once in a very great while a truly great 356 comes along, VIN 159539 is such a car. It was owned by the sales manager Christopher Casler of European Collectibles for six years and was driven as a weekend driver for several years unrestored with the original interior. In 2012 a decision was made to do a complete ground-up restoration. The 356SC was completely taken apart and every aspect was addressed. The body was stripped to steel, prepped, primed and painted (4-month process). The paint was done to show level in a special ordered color "Bali Blue". All the gaps and panel fit are perfect. All decks and doors match. Next, the undercarriage was stripped to steel and detailed including all the suspension. Original type sound deadener was installed in the interior and engine compartment, which makes the drive with the top up very quiet. Everything was re-chromed including the seat brackets, window frames, original 4.5" rims, chrome bezels, etc. The vent control on the dash, door handles, and lock cylinders were completely disassembled and restored by Victor Miles from Concours Refinishing, all the gauges were restored with new chrome bezels, the VDM clock was rebuilt to quartz mechanism by North Hollywood Speedometer, the original steering wheel was restored by Kock's Steering Wheel Restoration with the center spokes re-chromed, the Blaupunkt AM/FM radio was rebuilt, the chrome speaker surround grills were re-chromed with the correct cloth material installed, and all new rubber was installed. A complete new German interior was installed by Thomas Auto Trim from San Diego, California with attention to detail and originality. New wooden bows were installed on the original soft-top frame and 12 different red wine leather samples were inspected to pick the best color with the perfect grain. Over a 3 month period, the interior was done to perfection.

Mechanically all new suspension bushings were installed, the steering box was rebuilt, brake calipers rebuilt, new brake rotors and pads installed. The original 741 transmission was completely rebuilt with all new synchromesh & bearings. The original engine was taken down and inspected with perfect compression. The clutch and pressure plate balanced. All the engine sheet metal was powdered coated and the other parts CAD plated.

The thing that sets this 356 apart from the rest is the quality of the restoration. Everything was done with nothing left untouched. After a 2.5 year restoration, it was done and was above and beyond all expectations.
