Aston Martin Vantage V550 Background:
As with many other Astons, a high-performance Vantage model of the
Virage would later appear. First shown at Birmingham in September
1992, the Vantage was produced from 1993 through 2000 and, like so
many other Aston Vantages, soon became the only variant available.
Indeed, the Virage name lasted just a few years, with its final
descendants inheriting the simple and familiar "V8" name in final
sales and advertising literature.
The design was greatly freshened and improved, leaving only the
roof and doors of the original design remained intact. The Vantage
was significantly wider and appeared lower and more aggressive. The
rear-end treatment now used four round tail lights (rumoured to
have been those used on a Bova coach for the prototype). Like the
6.3, the Vantage used record-sized 362mm (14-inch) brake discs and
new 18 inch wheels.
The most radical change to the Vantage, however, was inside the
engine compartment. The 5.3-liter engine now sported massive twin
belt-drive, mechanical superchargers. Power output topped the
industry at 550bhp, and torque was equally impressive at 555 lbft
at just 4,000rpm. Top speed was 300kph (186mph), with a dash to 60
mph taking just 4.6 seconds. Considering that the kerb weight of
the car was almost two tons, this was no mean feat! The car soon
earned a well deserved reputation as brutally powerful and a beast
on any road!
Ex-Works Aston Martin Vantage V8 "V550" SCFDAM2S8TBL70111:
Aston Martin completed just 233 examples of their now legendary
Vantage V8 "V550" models. Our subject vehicle is sequentially the
111th of the 233 completed. We were very fortunate during our
purchase of this vehicle to acquire directly from Aston Martin, the
original ordering and completion records. These documents provide
an incredible amount of information related to the ordering,
construction and completion of this true "one-of-one" machine.
Just 97 of the 233 Vantage "V550s" built were left-hand-drive and
this particular Aston was the sole example completed in "Rolls
Royce Royal Blue" with Grey and Dark Blue seats and carpeting. It
is as such a complete "Piece-Unique" example like no other before
or after.
This Aston was originally ordered for completion by Aston's special
"Ex-Works" Department on April 20th, 1995. The original order
requested a left-hand-drive model with manual gearbox to be
finished with the exterior color in "Buckinghamshire Green" and the
interior in "Magnolia" with dark green piping on the seats and
two-tone beige and "Magnolia" carpeting. The order was to be filled
for the French Aston Martin Distributor in Paris. Assembly
commenced soon thereafter but Aston's original hand-written
assembly records show that the order was heavily revised on June
30th, 1995 at which point a very unique specification example came
to be. The change in construction came about with the cancellation
of the order by the French Aston Distributor, which was then
assigned and given to the official Aston Agent, Car & Driver
Classic Automobiles, Freidrich-Ebert-Damm 128, D-22047 Hamburg,
Germany.
The main changes in the revised order were both in the overall
appearance with a change of the exterior color to "Rolls Royce
Royal Blue" with a grey and dark blue piping on the seats and
interior combination. Additionally, given the numerous issues
related to the manual gearbox models coupled with the new 550bhp
double-supercharged engines, the manual gearbox was substituted
with a more usable and reliable automatic version. Steering
remained left-hand-drive as initially ordered and the vehicle was
completed to ROW (Rest of World Market / Germany)
specifications.
This Aston was completed on November 13th, 1995 and dispatched the
following day to ordering Agent, Car & Driver Classic Automobiles
in Hamburg. Two days later the official sale was recorded on
November 16th, 1995. Despite the delays in assembly and
construction, the vehicle was registered as a 1995 model
referencing the production year it was assembled.
Three months after being sold this Aston was exported from Germany
and imported in February of 1996 and registered on new Japanese
plates "34 38-32." It remained on these plates on March 23rd, 2009
when it received services totaling $5,375. At the time of this
service, the vehicle had covered 15,847kms. Additional service work
was completed on May 28th, 2009 totaling $4,800. The next recorded
services took place later that same year on July 11th, 2009. These
services totaled $4,090. Total mileage was recorded at this time as
16,148kms.
On August 19th, 2013 this Aston was issued new registration
documents and new Japanese plates "345 550." On August 30th, 2013,
full services were completed at which time the vehicle had covered
17,209kms. This Aston was again give full services on March 29th,
2017 at which time it had covered 17,705kms.
In early September of this year, our company inspected and agreed
to the purchase of this rare Aston Martin Vantage V8 "V550." Total
mileage at time of our purchase was 18,014kms.
