since being assembled by the Chrysler Corp. at its specialized
assembly plant in Michigan nearly two decades ago. In 1996, Dodge
began assembling what are now known as SR II cars, although the
earliest ones still used some left-over components from the first
generation. By the time this car was built in 2000, it had many
frame improvements, having lost 60 lbs and yet being 25% more
rigid. The 8.0L V10 engine also got some new hypereutectic pistons,
helping this monster engine reach 450 BHP and posting some
impressive numbers like 0-60 in four seconds, a quarter mile
elapsed time of 12.2 seconds at 119 MPH, a top speed of 185 MPH,
and an average slalom course speed of 73.6 MPH. Very impressive
looks and performance, especially when it's a one-year-only "Steel
Gray" colored coupe like this one. It's a striking color,
particularly when seen with the black leather interior and the
chrome Viper wheels. This American performance car is fully loaded
and the transmission underneath the floorpans is the legendary BW
T56 six speed manual, allowing the driver to take full advantage of
the 8.0L's impressive power band. This car is a brilliant
compromise of performance and comfort. Since earlier this year
Chrysler announced the Viper would no longer be a part of their
yearly offerings, collectors of all types have been scrambling to
find the rarest and most desirable models from throughout the 16
year history of this iconic sports car. This is going to be a very
collectible car in the future as enthusiasts sort out the good cars
from the great cars, to the best examples of each type. A
one-year-only color on a car with several up-dated performance and
safety features with less than 20,000 original miles will certainly
