1917 Woods Mobilette Sheridan Light Delivery Truck For Sale in
Howard, Colorado 81233
If you are someone who appreciates rare, vintage automobiles than
you owe it to yourself to check out this 1917 Woods Mobilette. This
two-door Sheridan Light Delivery Truck is one of only two known
units to exist. The Woods Mobilette Automobiles were touted as
America's First Cyclecar and built in Harvey, Illinois between 1913
and 1917. The Model 5A, such as this one, was the last of the Woods
Mobilette vehicles produced and also the most expensive. Previously
owned by Ellis B Jones of Russellville, Michigan, this 1917 model
has been under current ownership since 1998. It underwent a
comprehensive restoration that took over ten years to complete and
was finalized in 2004.
This Woods Mobilette Sheridan Light Delivery Truck is laced with
classic style and charm. With meticulous attention to detail
invested into every facet of its presentation, no expense has been
spared in maintaining the original look and luster of this
Mobilette's rich heritage. It is powered by a magneto fired
original Perkins gas engine that features 94 cubic inch
displacement and four cylinders. All major engine components were
balanced at Buds' Machine Shop in Lakewood, Washington. Not only
were the cylinders honed but the rods and pistons were
reconditioned as well. All intake and exhaust valves were replaced
with new ones, and all pistons were replaced with new rings.
Additionally, the valve seats were ground to fit the new valves.
The crankshaft was reconditioned to original specifications by
Waterhouse of Tacoma, Washington. Babbitt and Crankshaft
installation was done by Ed Martinson of Antique Automotive
Engineering, Inc. of Denver, Coloado. The magneto was rebuilt by Ed
Strain in Florida with all new ignition wires and spark plugs.
The transmission is a three forward speed, one reverse floor
shifted unit with multiple dry disc clutch. It is non-synchromesh
in design. The transmission was manufactured by Detroit Gear and
Machine Co. of Detroit, Michigan and was rebuilt by Brian Fortner
of Tacoma, Washington. The Differential/rear axle assembly is
conventional in appearance to most modern rear axle drive cars. The
gearing is supported by radial ball bearings. The rear-end gear
ratio is unknown. However, original sales literature quotes the
Sheridan to obtain a speed of 40 MPH and 40 MPG! This vehicle is
seated atop a 104-inch wheelbase and features all wooden spoke 30
by 3 inch original wheels with new rubber all the way around. The
brakes are 8-inch rear drum brakes are only located on the rear
axle, however there are also emergency brake binders affixed around
the outer circumference of the rear drums. Additionally, there is
an emergency magneto cut-off button located on the drivers
floor.
It is easy to see that this Mobilette is brimming with an intricate
and historical legacy, however with its dashing good looks this
Sheridan Light Delivery Truck is also sure to turn heads. The
woodwork was completed by Jeffrey Kroll, a custom woodworker in
Seattle, Washington. All replacement wood was quarter sawn American
white oak with beautiful grain patterns to match the original oak
that was used. The cost was upwards of $3,000. During the
restoration of this impressive cyclecar, New Rock Maple was used to
support the body which is exactly the same as was used when the car
was originally built. All woodwork was finished with five coats of
hand applied "Formbys" high gloss Tung Oil finish, for an exquisite
look! All metal body panels have been repaired and/or replaced and
brought up to original specifications. Original specifications were
duplicated to make a new gas tank with heavy wall steel sheet
metal. Additionally, all black body panels have been finished with
clear over Black powdercoat except the cowl panel and radiator
shell, which have been painted with conventional black base coat
with clear finish. The majority of all brackets, hinges, and
hardware have also been powdercoated with clear over color. Both
running boards have been finished with black "line-x" so as to
protect from the rigors of foot traffic. The upholstery, as with
the assembly and finish of this very rare truck, was completed by
the restorer/current owner. The rear curtains have been reproduced
and installed.
This 1917 Wood Mobilette Sheridan Light Delivery also features
versatile acetylene gas headlamps that can be powered as original,
or they can be electrically powered by a miniature 12-Volt battery
to be concealed in the brass colored gas tank which is mounted on
the passenger side running board, which is original in appearance.
There is also a restored black percussion horn mounted
appropriately on the steering column. Top it all off with the
original kerosene fueled, red lensed, "Indiana" tail light! For
