Things around much of the world in '49 were still very much in flux
in the aftermath of World War II, but United States was having
little of it, instead setting course for a new phase of economic
growth. The automobile industry in particular began to prosper,
construction went on a pronounced upswing and a truck like this
1949 GMC100 proved to be an indispensable tool as we set about
building our way into post-War industrial growth.
An inspired restoration, this GMC's metallic green exterior would
have been amply distinctive and eye-catching to start with, but
with a custom paint job that extends the color to the front grille,
running boards and bumpers, it's even more so - a very effective
and modern interpretation of a truly classic vehicle. Because the
badging and chrome found throughout, from the headlight housings
all the way back, are in good condition, the chrome finishes really
pop when contrasted with the verdant background. Centered on the
tailgate, you'll find a painted GMC insignia that is just one of
many nice finishing touches on this vintage truck. The stock stance
has been left intact, fitting for a working truck built to be ready
for action from the start. The finishing details were well looked
after when this workhorse was put back together, as its panels line
up nicely with tight, uniform gaps around the hood and doors and a
fresh-looking seal surrounds its rear window.
Inside, you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler looking vintage
dashboard area than what you'll see here. Fresh gauges with a
completely period-appropriate look stand out against a metallic
green dash painted to match the exterior, their oversized lettering
looking especially striking against their parchment-colored
backgrounds. In the center, there's dominant chrome badging proudly
proclaiming this to be a General Motors Truck and an expansive
speaker grille surrounding the original AM radio that looks as if
it could have been taken directly from a phonograph of its day. To
the right, you'll see a distinctive chrome-covered glove box door
matching its look and below you'll notice the registers of the
Vintage Air A/C system - a welcome bit of modern technology. This
is a very comfortable looking saddle-colored vinyl interior, with a
plushly-padded bench seat that doesn't appear to have seen much
use. In the back, the truck bed is lined with fresh wood planks,
interspersed with steel ribboning also painted to match the truck's
metallic green exterior.
The restored original drivetrain is centered on a 228 c.i. inline 6
that represented a marked improvement over the 216 featured in
several other truck models of its era, due to a far more durable
block and better oil circulation. It sits in a very tidy engine
compartment, surrounded by all stock-configured but fresh-looking
parts and is bolted to a 4-speed manual transmission. Have a look
underneath and you'll see that the undercarriage is very much up to
scratch as well, with nice straight frame rails, floor pans, and
crossmembers that contrast with the orange paint on the bellhousing
and oil pan. This venerable truck sits on a set of moon-style rims
that are emblazoned with GMC logos, and wrapped in a set of
Goodyear Wrangler radials.
