1966 Dodge Charger Hemi Race V-8
In 1966, a gentleman in San Diego had a specific request. "I
want a 1966 Dodge Charger with the police package and the spot
light delete, a the 426 race Hemi with 2 4bbl carbs and a 4 speed
manual transmission." Two Dodge dealers turned him down and
would not order the car according to his specifications. The
3rd Dealer, Howard Taylor Dodge in San Diego, said "Sure.
We'll get that ordered for you!"
In 1966, more than 37,000 Dodge Chargers rolled off the assembly
line in Michigan. Of that number, only 468 were fitted with
the 426 Hemi Race engine. Of the 468 Hemi equipped cars, 250
were fitted with the manual transmission. With the black
exterior/black interior combination, it is not known how many
police package with spotlight delete were ordered, but this is one
very rare car! This Charger is an extremely well documented
car including the original bill of sale from the dealership as well
as the deposit slip and purchase slip. In addition, extensive
maintenance records from work performed by Dodge Dealerships are
present with the car. The last picture presented is from
July, 1966, when the owner finally took delivery of this awesome
Charger.
This is a one owner, original, matching numbers car. It has
been a Western States Car all it's life, beginning in San Diego and
now in it's current location in Northern Wyoming. The
odometer reads 82,000 miles which the maintenance records support.
The car has received a repaint to factory specs, with the
door jams, trunk and engine bay showing original paint. All
body panels are original and there is no rust present. The
rearend is a Dana 60 and the car runs and drives great! The
police package presented a heavier duty suspension and beefier
brakes for better control.
You won't be disappointed in this extremely rare collector car.
