of 1998 as a 199 model, the all-new 996-generation Porsche 911
marked nothing short of a revolution in the hallowed halls of
Stuttgart. Excellence magazine's editors described the impact of
the new 996 best in a recent edition of its Porsche Buyers Guide
After 35 years of updated models, the new 996 was the first
100-persent new 911 since 1964. And what a 911 it was Larger yet
lighter than its predecessor, the 996 was also more powerful, more
refined, more aerodynamic, and easier to drive than the 993.
Totally new, the 996-series 911 featured a water-cooled flat-6
engine for the very first time. In addition to providing greater
power output and scope for future development, the new four cam
operated valvetrain and VarioCam system allowed 25 degrees of
adjustment for the intake cam timing, dictated by engine speed and
load. Displacing 3,387 cc, this short stroke engine was made for
high operating speeds and with 11.3 compression, it delivered 296
DIN horsepower at 6,800 rpm in basic form 320 bhp SAE and gave the
new 911 the power and performance to match its sleek new body.
Regarding the new 911's body, the 911/996, better aerodynamics and
lower rear-end lift were designed-in benefits of the new body
style, along with lower overall weight, sharpening overall
performance and handling, which remains stellar and includes
0-to-60 acceleration in less than 5 seconds with the rear-mounted
flat-6 developing 320 brake horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of
useful torque output. Produced during November 2002 and carrying an
MSRP of 78,850 when new, this striking 2003 Porsche Carrera is a
highly desirable 6-speed manual gearbox car with only 57,700 miles
that benefits from very good care and maintenance. Finished in
Arctic Silver Metallic over black leather, this highly optioned
sunroof example was also factory-equipped with heated front seats,
18-inch light alloy Carrera wheels, a rear window wiper, Porsche
Stability Management, the Bose high-end sound package, black floor
mats with Porsche lettering, power seat and Xenon headlamp
packages, and aluminum-faced instrument dials. As offered, this
outstanding example includes a clean Carfax report confirming
plenty of service records. Importantly, the IMS bearing has been
replaced.
