Jaguarists who prize catapult-like power and orbit-distorting
torque above stellar design or even agility were rewarded in 1999
by the XKR supercharged variant. With the enormous additional
thrust produced by the Eaton Roots-type supercharger, in
combination with the then-4.0-liter V-8, the steel cat was truly
unleashed. Suddenly, the somewhat hefty XKR was capable of
rocketing along autobahn fast lanes with Germany's best
high-performance machines. The important news in a car that hasn't
needed a substantial exterior revision for some time is the bigger,
more powerful AJ34 4.2-liter V-8 and a six-speed ZF automatic
transmission. Even without the extra cylinder-stuffing supercharger
boost, this engine makes a respectable 294 horsepower. For those,
however, who require the large-caliber, force-fed setup, the output
from the blower-aided 4.2 is 390 horsepower and 399 lb-ft of
big-cat pounce.Jaguarclaims, and it certainly feels like, 80
percent of the peak torque is available from 1400 rpm. So,
obviously, there's no waiting for the effortless surge needed to
merge or pass. The maximum road speed of the car is electronically
limited to 155 mph, although we managed a true 161 mph. Adding to
this automobile's ability to coddle and excite are the latest in
driving electronics. These features include auto-adjusting shock
damping, dynamic stability control, adaptive cruise control, and
emergency brake assist. The R version also gets retuned steering, a
firmer suspension, a lower ride height, a standard navigation
system, Brembo brakes, leather-wrapped Recaro bucket seats, and a
Momo steering wheel. The sleek XKR is about three things: sparkling
performance, elegant luxury, and high British style. Body Style:
