designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, Ferrari's 365 GT4
Berlinetta Boxer marked Ferrari's long-awaited mid-engine challenge
to the Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Bora. With styling rooted in
Pininfarina's 1968 P6 concept car and debuted as a prototype in
1971 at Turin, the production 365 GT4 BB debuted at Paris in 1973
Paris Salon with 'flat-12' power based on the Scuderia's 312 B GP
cars. A massive performer, the 'BB' and its successors are
significant as Ferrari's first 12-cylinder, mid-engine road models.
In typical Ferrari practice, the BB was steadily developed and
improved, with many updates culminating in the 512 BBi which
arrived at Paris in 1981. As the final form of the 'BB' series, the
i denoting its new Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Performance
remains electrifying with road tests quoting top speeds matching
the old front-engine 'Daytona'. The 512 BBi also dominated posters,
magazine covers, and even Red Rocker Sammy Hagar's I Can't Drive 55
music video, capturing a new generation of Ferrari enthusiasts.
Just 1,007 examples of the 512 BBi were produced from 1981 through
1984, when the Testarossa eventually succeeded it. This
late-production Ferrari 512 BBi was built during the latter part of
1983 and then first sold and registered in 1984 in California,
where it has remained under single-owner care since 1985. As
originally intended by Ferrari, this Berlinetta Boxer has been
properly enjoyed by the owner on cross-country road trips along
blue and gray roads almost annually and he stated to us, ...the
'Boxer' nickname fits the car perfectly as it bulges like a
bruiser, being tough, brawny, and designed for pure driving
enjoyment with no concessions to practicality. After all, it was
the ultimate expression of Ferrari's first mid-engine production
model sporting an F1-derived Flat-12 powerplant and marks the most
exotic Ferrari model of the era. Colors are excellent, with the
Boxer finished in iconic red paint with black 'Boxer' lower
surfaces and black upholstery including 'Daytona' seats with red
stripes. As offered, this 512 BBi benefits from almost $100k
invested over the past 30-plus years into various improvements,
maintenance work, and replacements. A recent full service,
including cam belts and tensioners, makes this true road-warrior
rocket ready for continued enjoyment and adventurous road trips on
command. Included with the Boxer are the owner's manual, tool
pouches 1 for hand tools and 1 for wheel changes, the space-saver
spare wheel/tire, cargo-compartment panels and covers, extra floor
mats, and a car cover. Numerous records, including invoices and
receipts will be provided upon request following the Boxer's sale.
However, the original Metric wheels are not included. Offered from
a true enthusiast, this 512 BBi is not only capable of reaching 180
mph, it has accomplished the feat twice with the owner at the
wheel, on U.S. Highway 50, aka The Loneliest Road in America. While
reaching this velocity is something to aim for, holding that speed
for 3 full minutes in confidence is another matter and an
unforgettable experience. Few supercars of any era can boast of
this performance, but this 512 BBi is proven to deliver!
