Targa Porsche built open sports cars right from the beginning, but
the rise of the Nader inspired nanny state of the late 60's
appeared to herald the demise of the convertible. Porsche's answer
was provided by Butzi Porsche himself in the form of the new for
1967 Targa, which gave buyers their beloved open driving experience
with the added benefit of a protective rollover hoop that also
added torsional strength. This Porsche 911S Soft Window Targa is a
very exclusive first year example that also features the Weber
carbureted 2.0 liter 160 HP flat six that characterized the S Model
along with Koni front struts, ventilated disc brakes and Fuchs
wheels. Weighing a feathery 2,272 pounds, the 911S was, and is, a
brilliant performer that substantially elevated Porsche's already
stellar reputation. Porsche only produced 483 Targas in 1967 and
switched to a full glass backlight in 1968, a fact that adds to
this car's exclusivity. Documented with a Kardex provided by LeMans
winning Porsche racer and marque expert Jurgen Barth, the car was
built on March 1, 1967 and delivered new through Porsche North
America to New Englander John Buffum, who was then on the cusp of a
great rallying career that would inclucde 11 national titles and
117 national wins. Classic Showcase, a highly accomplished European
Marque specialist in Oceanside, CA, completed the comprehensive and
thoroughly documented nut and bolt restoration around 2011,
refinishing it in Polo Red, the original color, with black
leatherette upholstery. This outstanding Porsche is an
authenticated example of a great vintage 911S Targa, and with its
Porsche COA, is perfectly suited to every type of automotive
recreations from track events to rallies and weekend cruising.
