Vehicle Description
The 88 enjoyed a great success, inspiring a popular 1950s slogan,
"Make a Date with a Rocket 88", and also a song, "Rocket 88", often
considered the first rock and roll record. Starting with the
trunk-lid emblem of the 1950 model, Oldsmobile would adopt the
rocket as its logo, and the 88 name would remain in the Olds lineup
until the late 1990s, almost until the end of Oldsmobile itself.
The 1950 model won the 1950 Carrera Panamericana. This Oldsmobile
has been made into a Carrera Panamericana race car. It features a
462 cu in Big Block Oldsmobile V-8 with Mondello cylinder heads and
intake manifold and is backed with a 4 speed automatic transmission
and floor-mounted shifter. It has been re-finished in a beautiful
maroon finish with race graphics. The chrome trim and bright work
are reminders of the bold styling of these cars of the '50's. The
original seats have been re-upholstered and the battery is now
under the rear seat. Includes power disc brakes and modern gauges.
