1979 Mercedes 450SLC 5.0
Stunning 931H Magnetite Blue over Blue Leather
The Mercedes-Benz 450SLC 5.0 was a very limited European market production variant of the R107/C107 SL-Class that debuted in 1978. The 450SLC 5.0 was offered in a four seater two door sport coupe body style that was powered by Mercedes´ M 117 E 50 naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine that had an output of 240hp and 295 lb-ft paired to a 3 speed automatic transmission. This 5025cc engine block was also used to participate in the 1978 World Rally Championship. Production of the C107 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC 5.0 ended in 1980. Only 1,636 of this special variant were built.
Purchased out of California in 2003, this example has been with its current owner for 21 years. I am helping my friend / neighbor sell off a few cars from his collection and this is one of them. We currently have it on his lift to go through the entire brake system (sticky calipers), change all the fluids / filters and give it a general going over. It has mainly been in storage during his ownership. There is no rust underneath besides one area on the right front frame rail where I can see some small pinholes. Original aluminum trunk lid the factory installed to save weight on the car. The car has been repainted in its original 931 Magnetite blue at some point. It was an average job and shows its age. There are various small spots that show mediocre prep and storage scrapes. The interior is decent but does need a main carpet set as the drivers footwell and rear footwell pieces are missing. The dash pad does have sun cracking and I noted the drivers side headrest has some damage.
This car would be an excellent starting point for a full restoration or to sort out and use as a daily driver style that you wouldn't have to stress out about. We will be getting it roadworthy as our schedule permits over the next month and will re-assess and re-photograph the car for further marketing. The car can be inspected at the garage in its current state here on a lift. Feel free to ask for questions or for more details. Titled (clean) in Pennsylvania with antique plates.
Issues noted:
repaired oil pan
headrest leather damage on drivers side
cracking on dash pad
non-original radio
missing footwell carpets
windshield washer reservoir cracked and needs replacement
needs new hood pad
trim mouldings have small dents and needs new clips/grommets
missing front lower bumper valence and one side is loose, needs clips
average paint with scratches, dings, small areas of surface rust etc.
muffler end has a rust through area
typical issue with paint flaking off rear side glass fins on drivers side
tires are toast but we will replace those after going through the brakes
