For Sale: 1929 Ford Model A in Saint Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

By any measure, the Model A Ford belongs to the select group of cars that have for decades helped to anchor the world of collector and antique automobiles. A rumbleseat roadster such as this 1929 example is among the most desirable versions. The Model A had a difficult act to follow when it arrived in December of 1927 to replace the Model T, a car then still esteemed for its durability, simplicity and the fact that it had made the automobile accessible to nearly anybody who wanted one. The T had evolved since its October, 1908 introduction, remaining conceptually faithful to the original throughout its life and becoming sadly outdated by the end. The Model A addressed its predecessor’s weaknesses by starting with a fresh design. The new engine – still a four-cylinder flathead – generated 40 horsepower compared to the Model T’s 20 and drove through a conventional three-speed selective transmission. Its sliding-gear design and H pattern are familiar to a modern driver, unlike the Model T’s two-speed planetary unit with its foot-pedal and handbrake controls. The combination enables a Model A to keep up with reasonably paced traffic today and its mechanical four-wheel brakes provide adequate stopping power. Both qualities give it the advantage over the Model T and Ford explained in a pre-introduction ad that the Model A “is an entirely new and different Ford car, designed and created to meet modern conditions … the new Ford is not only new in appearance and performance, it is new in mechanical design.” The Model A took off with calendar-year production topping 600,000 units, so Ford wisely chose to make few changes for 1929. No doubt, a good portion of the more than 1,300,000 Model As sold that year went to those who were loyal to Fords through experience with Model Ts and in the hobby world, the Model A has long shared the enthusiasm shown to the earlier car. This 1929 rumbleseat roadster has known that enthusiasm firsthand. An older restoration remaining entirely presentable, its subtle beige body and black fenders are complimented by orange wheels and striping. The trunk on the rear rack adds to the appearance even as it enhances the car’s practicality by providing extra carrying capacity. The tan top covering a brown interior and the windwings at the windshield ensure that the Model A’s occupants will be comfortable in a wide range of weather, an important consideration when a car is such a strong runner and enjoyable driver. This is a Ford whose owner will look forward to being on the road with it because from a tour to a family drive, he’ll know that it’s always going to be a great time.
