For Sale: 1930 Chrysler Model 77 in Bedford Heights, Ohio

Vehicle Description

Known for innovation and technologically advanced designs, Walter P. Chrysler took the company bearing his name from start-up in 1924 to over 60,000 units sold in 1930. Competing in the mid-priced field with the likes of Buick, Studebaker, and even some of the lesser models of Peerless, the cars were stylish, fast, and thanks to Chrysler’s early adoption of hydraulic brakes, some of the safest cars on the road. Despite the stock market crash of 1929, Chrysler heavily revamped their 1930 model lineup with new styling, increased horsepower, more features, and introduced the spectacular Imperial line designed to compete with the likes of Packard and Cadillac at the top of the luxury car market.

Other than the mighty Imperial (which was technically a different brand) the Model 77 was the top-of-the-line Chrysler. Part of Chrysler's success was their racing pedigree. Their cars appeared at Le Mans, Spa and in the Mille Miglia since 1924.

The Chrysler 77 series was named thusly because the company guaranteed a cruising speed of 77 miles per hour and a top speed of 90 miles per hour. Power was supplied by a 100 horsepower six-cylinder motor. The Chrysler 77 also featured four-wheel hydraulic brakes, a new flat V-type radiator and a floor-mounted gearshift for the four-speed transmission. Also in 1930, cars were wired for a new option, the radio. Chrysler became the first major car to adopt the downdraft carburetor for better fuel distribution; the gravity flow vacuum tank was replaced by the cam driven fuel pump, and the carburetor was moved to the top of the block, at the same time.

This Chrysler 77 sedan benefited from a recent frame off restoration. The grey broadcloth interior is beautifully appointed. The original window and interior door hardware are in excellent original condition. The chrome is replated except for the spotlight, which has its original plating. There are privacy window shades on the two rear windows behind the back doors as well as the rear window. The roomy rear seat is very comfortable with lots of leg room. Two decorative ash trays are on each side above the arm rests. All gauges are working and clear. This would be a great car for a family outing, car show or tour.

The current owner of the car is the second owner. He purchased it from his neighbor (the original owner) in 1967. The car was painstakingly restored by its current owner.
