STK 2122 1969 Mercury Cyclone
Back in the late sixties, the number of NASCAR fans was growing in droves. The big-block Fords and Mercurys were winning on Sundays and the dealers were seeing a lot of foot-traffic on Mondays. Mercury wisely decided to capitalize on this. Their most successful driver, Cale Yarborough, was driving a Mercury Cyclone at the track. The folks at Merc took the factory Cyclone fastback, dropped in a 351-4V Windsor, used a red/white paint custom scheme like the Wood Brothers and had an instant success. Our 1969 Cyclone Spoiler is a beautiful example of this marketing genius. It has been in a private collection for the last 8 years and we have the MartiAutoWorks Report that verifies the complete build-structure. The 290hp 351 Windsor has 10.7 compression with 4.0” bores that provides this little Mercury with 385lb./ft. of torque. This great motor later became the basis for the new 5.8L Mustang performance power plants and many folks say that it is one of America’s best ever. Our Torino backs up the Windsor with a FMX HD 3-speed automatic with twin planetary gears. The Candy Apple Red/Wimbledon White paint is in excellent condition, as is the original cloth and vinyl interior. For a little nostalgia, the factory AM puts out great old tunes. The suspension is tight and managed by power steering, disc/drum brakes and beautiful factory wheels with period-correct Firestone Wide Oval tires. This low-mileage classic is a piece of Mercury history from a time when drivers like Cale Yarborough drove real “stock” cars. It is an investment that will not disappoint.
