For Sale: 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn in Santa Ynez, California
Beautiful 1955 Rolls Royce Silver Dawn. SVJ91 is one of the last 50 Silver Dawns built in the final year of production for the Silver Dawn. This car runs and drives very well and has an important update of the rear axle bearings to a modern design. A solid car for concours restoration, or to simply drive and enjoy as is for many years to come.
Originally purchased by Lady Joyce L Mason of London, England. Brought to the USA in 1971 and in one collection until owner's passing in 2004, when the current owner acquired the car which now has 136,000 miles on it. Extensive service documentation from new, including original detailed service verification letter from the Rolls Royce London Repair Depot.
A top and bottom engine overhaul was performed at 124,000 miles.
The master cylinder, brake cylinders, and shoes have been recently replaced. The brake drums were ground true and the brake power assist works properly and smoothly.
The exhaust system is solid and free of leaks.
The oil pan was removed, bottom end of engine inspected, and pan reinstalled with new gasket.
The Hydramatic transmission, which was replaced in 1964 by Rolls Royce Depot (London) at 75,815 miles, shifts smoothly and properly. The transmission pan was removed, filter cleaned, and fluid refilled. The fluid drained from the transmission was free of discoloration or odor.
A very important service and update was performed recently on the rear end assembly and differential. New heavy duty rear axle bearings and retainers were professionally installed on NOS rear axles. Additionally, the differential was disassembled, inspected, and new bearings installed, as well as professional machining for acceptance of a modern pinion seal . See website www.kda132.com for detailed information on the proper procedure for this rear axle bearing update and differential overhaul, as well as other useful information on the Silver Dawn.
The paint presents well and is generally glossy, but has defects that would be expected from a 40+ year old repaint, including some chips and crazing. Perhaps a “20 footer”.
Interior is in very nice original condition with no rips or tears in the leather seats, the rear sunshade has been replaced with a material chosen to match the original but with enhanced UV durability. The original factory installed lap and shoulder belts are in very good cosmetic condition.
The boot tool set is complete. Under Bonnet oiler and flashlight are present. The under-seat tool tray is not complete, but includes a new reproduction tool insert and excellent condition hinged metal cover. The wood portion will need to be reconstructed and detail instructions for that are included.
The near new condition trafficators are currently disconnected in favor of operating turn signals on the boot, but could be reconnected.
The tube type radio functions well. All exterior and interior lights work properly.
Superb quality Rolls Royce reprint Owners Manual, plus Parts and Service manuals as well as other Silver Dawn related literature will be included for the purchaser, as well as some spares.
Car won sponsors “Award of Excellence” at 2016 Wheels and Windmills car show.
