Coming off a recent buyout by GM in 1999, Hummer began plans for their new model, the Hummer H3. By the 2005, Hummer had developed the 2006 model year and based this smaller sized example off the GMT255 platform which had been successful for both the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact pickups. The H3 was the first of its kind to be built at GM facilities in Shreveport, LA and also in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The smallest of the Hummer lineup, this model became a good mix of off-road capability and practicality and broadened the already recognized Hummer lineup. Production continued until the demise of Hummer as a whole which took place shortly after a failed sale to a Chinese company during GM's bankruptcy ending the Hummer line in 2010.
