The 2004 Chevrolet SSR pickup/convertible was designed to be a custom car from the factory, but this one goes one step further. It retains all the great original pieces, but from the moment you open the Lamborghini style doors, you know this one has been built to be unique even in a crowd of standouts.
The factory paint has been kept in the kind of condition that you know plenty of care has gone into this future classic. But with a name like Ultra Violet Blue Metallic, you also know this one was ready to get wild. The hood has cool custom graphics painted on there to give you a modern take on the pinstriping that you often see on 1950s hot rodded pickups (a very cool connection since the SSR's retro design is based on this trucks.) Each side has a custom painted American flag flapping in the wind, and it all ends in more custom pinstriping and a chrome kit on the tailgate. While the tonneau cover came from the factory, the rear spoiler is a great add-on that matches perfectly. But by far, the largest upgrade is seen the moment you open up the doors and show off the custom Lamborghini-style scissor hinges.
The Ebony leather interior is anything but pickup truck basic, offering sculpted bucket seats, exterior color-matched center console, and every feature GM could dream up. And with this low mileage example, it means there's been little seat time to make an impression on the interior. Features include automatic climate control, power windows, power locks, power seats, power mirrors, cruise control, and a thundering AM/FM/CD stereo system that fills the cockpit with sound at any speed. There are even cool custom carbon fiber appearance inserts with a purple hue on the dash and steering wheel. Touch a button and the trick folding hardtop disappears behind the seats, making this the coolest open-air truck since the Model A roadster pickup of the '30s. But while this might look retro, the safety features are modern with everything from front and side airbags to anti-lock brakes. While the covered and locking bed is large enough to carry really big stuff, it's beautifully finished with carpets and wood. In fact, it's really just an extremely spacious trunk.
The key to the SSR's performance is the fuel-injected 5.3-liter V8. This numbers-matching motor is related the GM's truck line, but it also has some lightweight performance characteristics. So it's the perfect blend for this pickup/roadster. There are plenty of performance upgrades available for those who want to take it to the extreme (and as you can see there's already plenty of shiny appearance packages on this motor.) But with 300 hp already on tap, it's already a contender. Turn the key and it starts instantly; the idle is smooth; and the dual exhaust hums around town like a Camaro with a tailgate. The four-speed automatic transmission makes it very user-friendly even on the highway. Plus, with powerful four-wheel disc brakes and a suspension built more for handling than hauling, you'll never get tired of driving this truck. Flashy wheels were part of the factory package, with oversized alloys required to fill those big flared fenders (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) that wear grippy Goodyear Eagle RS-A performance tires.
