For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Camaro in Elyria, Ohio

Vehicle Description

Named for the hypersonic military aircraft that plies the edges of outer space at speeds exceeding Mach 5, this custom 1970 Camaro Resto Mod known as Scramjet has won many top awards for builder Penfound Design in Elyria, Ohio. The car makes the most of the slippery second-generation Camaro, and features design cues from that advanced aircraft in the form of seven air scoops on the hood, roof and fenders, that close seamlessly into the body when the car is parked. A fabricated nose extends forward several inches with a deep air-intake grill, and is complemented by Corvette bumpers and tunnelled headlights. At the rear, 1990 Corvette ZR1 tail lights are set deep into a hand-fabricated rear panel incorporating a central exhaust bezel, Corvette bumpers and an integrated rear spoiler. Scramjet-level power comes from a Chevrolet Performance LS7 7.0L/505 HP crate engine mated to a 4L80E Turbo Hydra-Matic 6-speed transmission and nestled into a custom-fabricated engine surround. The Scramjet Camaro uses Art Morrison front and rear chassis sections with Ride Tech suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes by SSBC. Unique custom-made Boyd Coddington/Penfound Design wheels with Toyo Z-rated radial tires add a striking finish to the Scramjet, which is finished in “Mach 4 White” paint specially blended by PPG’s colorists. The “clean and smooth” theme extends to the custom interior, which features snappy red upholstery and a Kenwood/JVC head unit with Infinity Box “intelligent wiring” to control numerous functions, including engine start and stop, power-window controls, headlight functions, and scoop opening and closing. Special Corbeau sport seats and a carpeted rear storage area are other interior features. The Scramjet Camaro has amassed an impressive show record in 2015 that includes qualifying as a Street Machine Of The Year entrant in the Goodguys PPG Nationals, First Place Street Touring in the Cleveland Autorama, Cruisin’ Times Top 40 All Star Award, Second Place in the Mild Custom Class and inclusion in the Nine Noteworthy Cars at the Detroit Autorama and an appearance at Mac’s Motor City Garage.
