Like any longstanding nameplate that's fortunate enough to enjoy a
rabid fanbase, the Camaro is equated with quite a few amusing
stereotypes. High among those judgments is the common theme of loud
pipes, loud paint and loud owners. While some enthusiasts fully
embrace that mindset, others focus on the innate negativity
associated with each of those attributes. That's why it's always
nice to find a car like this awesome F1 Super Sport. Dressed in
subdued Seafrost paint and pliable Black vinyl, it's certainly
classy enough to fly under the radar. Sporting a tweaked
396/4-speed drivetrain, it's the kind of car that walks softly and
carries a big stick. And, well, you can decide if you want to be a
loud owner. If you're looking to slide behind the wheel of a
vintage panther, but don't really want look-at-me paint, polarizing
Rally Stripes and earth-shaking acoustics, here's a well done Super
Sport that puts the "class" back in classic!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Conducted sometime prior to 2004, this Chevy's detailed restoration
began with massaging the car's rock-solid body in to
better-than-new condition. When that shell was smooth and aligned,
correct Seafrost base was accented with thick and glossy clear.
When that pigment was dried and buffed, a black Super Sport stripe
was complemented with traditional black rockers and a familiar
black valance. And today, this coupe rolls as one top-notch cruiser
that's ready to turn heads and win trophies!
Thanks to the variety of factory options available for the 1968
model year, this Camaro features a nice mix of common traits that
work extremely well together. At the front of the car, a
traditional Rally Sport grille centers a classy "SS" emblem above a
bright bumper and familiar Rally Sport parking lamps. Above that
grille, a "Camaro" branded header leads the eye to a requisite
Super Sport hood. Behind that hood, tinted glass sits inside
stainless wipers, straight stainless frames and a correct vinyl
roof that was installed by our own RKM Performance Center. At the
sides of that glass, a sculpted profile floats correct mirrors,
correct door handles and correct marker lamps around bright wheel
trim, deluxe rocker trim and appropriate fender badging. And at the
back of the car, monochromatic Rally Sport taillights illuminate
Rally Sport reverse lamps, an "SS" branded fuel cap, a D80 decklid
spoiler and a second bright bumper.
ENGINE
Lift this F1's chrome-trimmed hood and you'll find a date-correct,
396 cubic inch Chevrolet big block wedged inside a Satin Black
engine bay that's detailed all the way down to its fresh decals and
reproduction paint marks. Power originates when wind whips from a
polished air cleaner in to a 670cfm Holley Street Avenger, which is
anchored between stainless fluid lines and an aluminum Chevrolet
Performance intake. That air/fuel mixture travels to factory-spec
heads, which ride under polished valve covers. Sparks get sequenced
from an MSD Pro-Billet distributor to loomed Packard TV R
Suppression cables. Spent gases roar through aluminized pipes via
fully restored exhaust manifolds. Charge comes courtesy of a fresh
alternator, which spins between a 5-blade pulley fan, factory power
steering and a familiar Frigidaire compressor. A lightweight
aluminum radiator provides cooling. And details like a fresh brake
booster, Harrison AC components and a Delco Energizer battery
create a clean and purposeful appearance.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Park this Chevy on a lift and you'll find solid floors that provide
a fitting backdrop for first-rate hardware. Behind the buff big
block, a 1969 Muncie 4-speed utilizes a high quality Hayes clutch
to twist power through an Eaton posi-traction differential and 3.08
Richmond gears. Beneath that drivetrain, a tagged and rebuilt
suspension employs factory power steering and a sturdy rear sway
bar. Stops come courtesy of power-assisted discs and drums. Charred
dinosaurs travel the aforementioned pipes to a factory replacement
muffler that, like the car's top, was installed by our own RKM
Performance Center. And torque meets the pavement through 14-inch
Rally Wheels, which turn F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sport
redlines.
INTERIOR
During this Camaro's thorough restoration, a simple and purposeful
interior was equipped with a few carefully chosen amenities and
wrapped in quality Dynamat insulation. Correct trim abounds, with
Standard door panels and Standard bench and bucket seats framing a
factory-spec console that's complete with a familiar Hurst shifter
and 4-pack accessory gauges. Above that console, a stylish dash
hangs factory air conditioning next to a digitally tuned radio that
makes good use of two rear-mounted speakers. Below that console,
durable, bowtie-branded floor mats protect fresh, color-keyed
carpet. In front of the driver, a classy Walnut steering wheel laps
a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a restored and matted
trunk hides a space saver spare tire beneath fresh decklid
decals.
