For sale in our Chicago showroom is a 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster. The Sports Roadster was a limited production model in 1962 and only 1,427 were produced. Some of the striking differences were additional front fender badges, 48-spoke Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels and a passenger side grab bar added to the front dash. The most interesting component that set this apart was a fiberglass Tonneau cover that gave the car an appearance of a 2 seat roadster while still having the ability to seat 4 passengers if necessary. Another unique feature is the swing away steering wheel. When the vehicle is in park you can move the steering wheel a full 18" inches to the right to allow easy entry and exit for the driver. Another innovation of the time was a "floating" rear view mirror which is now standard on most modern cars. There are no separate door handles and the side body molding acts as the handle with a pushbutton underneath.
Inside you will notice this car is loaded with options for the time including power windows, power driver seat and power convertible top. This car is also equipped with an optional spotlight bringing the original sale price to $4729.90 which was only about $300 less than a new Cadillac. This car looks great from any angle but seeing that top down with the tonneau cover really gives the impression of a luxurious roadster with clean lines and a classic 1960's style.
Under the hood you will find the Original and strong running 390 Cubic Inch V8 was just overhauled about 200 miles ago and is ready to get this car moving up to highway speed without hesitation. The 3-speed automatic transmission shifts very nice and make for a comfortable and easy drive.
