For Sale: 1957 Jaguar XK140 in Saint Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

The sensational XK120 had proved to be a major success for Jaguar, establishing them as a premier builder of world-class sports cars. With its exotic twin-cam engine, stunning bodywork and near 120mph performance, the XK120 became one of the premier players in the post-war sports car revolution. As wonderful as it was, the XK120 did have a few flaws. It had a cramped cockpit, limited luggage space and some ageing technology such as lever-action shock absorbers. 1954 saw the XK120 refined and renamed the XK140, which sought to correct some of the complaints of the earlier car. The XK140 largely shared the XK120’s svelte lines, but was adorned with larger bumpers, additional trim and slightly enlarged to make for a larger, roomier cockpit. Under the bodywork, braking performance was improved and the antiquated steering box and lever shocks of the 120 were replaced with modern rack-and-pinion steering and telescopic dampers. Like the XK120 before, the XK140 was available in three body styles: Coupe, Drophead Coupe and the OTS (open two-seat) roadster. This 1957 XK140 OTS roadster is simply beautiful in Old English white over a gorgeous black leather interior. Starting as an exceptionally clean original example, it was extensively restored in 1995 and has received a few sensible upgrades to make for a more enjoyable experience on the road. The body was restored to a high standard and remains straight and tidy with excellent panel fit and finish. A few minor blemishes hardly detract from the overall appeal, and they demonstrate this is a car built to be used on the road. Proper black wall radial tires (an original option on the XK140) sit on lovely 16” chrome wire wheels. The black leather interior is in excellent condition, featuring a properly trimmed canvas top and matching tonneau cover. Under the long bonnet rests a 3.4L XK inline six with matching numbers head and block. The cooling system has been upgraded to a high quality aluminum radiator and electric fan. The original 4-speed Moss gearbox has been replaced by a slick-shifting 5-speed manual for effortless long distance cruising. A set of XK150 Disc brakes dramatically improve stopping distance and brake feel, allowing the car to be run confidently in modern traffic. Trouble-free charging is handled by a modern 1-wire GM-type alternator, and a power steering system has been seamlessly integrated. Combining the best of the XK120 and the XK150, this XK140 would be welcome at local shows or make an ideal entrant for the Colorado Grand, New England 1000, or simply out on your favorite back roads for a weekend of touring. Regardless of what you choose to do, this XK140 was built to be enjoyed on the road.
