Cadillac was charging into the well-established sports car market held exclusively by Mercedes and Jaguar with their proven roadsters. The Allanté was a two-door, two-seater roadster manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1987 until 1993, with roughly 21,000 models built over its 7-year production run. The body of the Allanté was designed and built in Italy by Pininfarina The completed bodies were shipped 4,600 miles (7,400 km) from Italy in specially equipped Boeing 747s, 56 at a time to Cadillac's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant. The bodies were then mated to the chassis. The Allante represents the second year of production and along with the 4.1L V8 and 4 speed auto transmission was a smooth and reliable roadster that put the European counterparts on notice of another kid in town. With standard features that were very impressive by any car standards, the Allante pushed them even further with options that were new for any production car such as, 12-way Power Seats, Aluminum Hardtop, Electronic Dash and Display, On-Board Computer, Auto Climate Control, and power everything.
