Description

The Plymouth Road Runner created a niche within a niche and has been at the top of Mopar fans wish lists for decades now. Big block power plus an affordable price tag means that these cars represented an irresistible equation, both then and now. So while youre looking at this 1968 Road Runner, bear in mind that its still more horsepower per dollar than youll get almost anywhere else. Chrysler styling was a love-it-or-hate-it proposition in the late-60s, too conservative for some, yet playfully aggressive and built to cater to those crazy kids and their hot rods. In truth, the Road Runner has aged better than most of its siblings simply because it didnt follow fads. Painting it Burgundy (yep, thats the factory name) certainly helps, and making sure the steel underneath is straight pays big dividends. The lack of stripes, loud colors, or other add-ons beyond the relatively subtle hood inserts works well here, creating a neo-sleeper that packs big power without advertising it. Finish quality is good enough to go out and have fun without worries and it carries a bit of swagger when you pull into the cruise night parking lot. All the chrome and stainless trim is intact and in decent shape, too, particularly that nigh-irreplaceable tail panel on the trunk. And those little tiny round side marker lights really are about the coolest thing youve seen today, arent they? The interior of this car will impress you with its style. While most of these bargain-priced muscle cars wore basic black, someone with some taste and distinction filled out the order sheet on this one, giving it white upholstery accented by burgundy carpets and a matching dash. The seat covers and door panels are undoubtedly recent replacements that look great, and with a bench seat this big coupe is a legitimate 6-passenger automobile. The factory instruments cover all the vitals and youll note that the steering wheel has been treated to a nicely-done leather wrap to add a bit of luxury. The column-shifted TorqueFlite was an option (a 4-speed was standard) and it really suits this car quite well, despite its street-brawler mission. The big trunk also bears in mind that this car can haul six passengers, and its nicely finished and comes complete with a full-sized spare, which is a correct Goodyear redline tire. The 383 cubic inch big block was unique to the Road Runner, dishing out a robust 335 horsepower and a very impressive 425 pounds of torque. Not too shabby for a base engine, right? This one has been fortified with a Quadrajet carburetor under the original air cleaner, plus a set of Mopar Performance finned valve covers that look racy. Hemi Orange paint on the block gives it a hi-po look under the hood and Chrysler knew that wrinkle finish paint looked fast. The beefy TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and 8.75-inch rear (which looks freshly finished) were bulletproof parts of the powertrain that made the Road Runner so formidable. Theres also a nice-sounding dual exhaust system with correct rectangular tips, a recent gas tank, and pretty Magnum 500 wheels with fat 225/70/14 Goodyear radials at all four corners, so it looks ready to pounce. You can look at this car two ways: a ton of performance for not a lot of cash or an opportunity to relive the past. Either way, you wont be disappointed with all that torque. Call today!
