Description

1957 CORVETTE ROADSTER
THE 1957 CORVETTE IS SEEN BY MANY AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BODY DESIGN OF THE EARLY VETTE'S AND 'THE HOLY GRAIL' / HIGH WATER MARK IN CORVETTE HISTORY WITH IT'S BEAUTIFUL SCOOPED FENDERS, SIDE COVE AND SMILING 'TOOTH' GRILLE. THIS BEAUTIFUL RE-DESIGN OVER THE '55 BODY WAS CONTINUED ESSENTIALLY UNCHANGED FROM '56 BUT, G.M. ADDED ANOTHER CHOICE (INCA SILVER) TO THE COLOR PALLETTE. OFFERED IN LIMITED NUMBER'S CHEVROLET HANDBUILT ONLY 3,467 OF THESE EARLY FIBERGLASS ROADSTERS. BUT, THE BENCHMARK WAS REACHED THIS YEAR AS THE CORVETTE WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A TRUE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTSCAR. THIS CORVETTE RACING LEGACY WAS BOLSTERED THROUGH THE JIM FITCH 'SEBRING RACE PROGRAM' AND DR. DICK THOMPSON'S S.C.C.A. CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM. THE BIG NEWS WAS THE ENGINE WAS INCREASED FROM 265 CUBIC INCHES TO 283 AND YOU COULD CHOOSE FROM 5 DIFFERENT POWER DISPLACEMENTS. THE BASE MOTOR 283/210 H.P., A 245 H.P. WITH 2-4V CARBS AND ALUM. INTAKE, FUEL INJECTION AND HYDRAULIC LIFTERS AT 250 H.P., THEN 270 H.P. BY GOING TO SOLID LIFTERS & 2-4V'S, AND FINALLY THE 283 WITH FUEL INJ. OR THE RAREST OF THEM ALL THE 283/283 WITH FUEL INJECTION, HOT CAM AND SOLID LIFTERS (WE LAST SAW ONE SELL HERE AT $110K 14 YEARS AGO). THE MANUAL 3-SPD. TRANSMISSION WAS STANDARD WITH THE 2-SPEED AUTOMATIC 'POWERGLIDE' LISTED AS AN OPTION. OF THE 3,467 '1957' CORVETTES MADE, 1510 CARRIED THE MANUAL GEARBOX. THIS WAS THE YEAR (OVER 1/2 WAY THROUGH THE PRODUCTION YEAR: MAY 1957 TO BE EXACT) CORVETTE FINALLY GOT A 4-SPEED. 664 WERE MADE- (HOWEVER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO ASCERTAIN HOW MANY ARE LEFT AS MANY OF THE 3-SPEEDS HAVE BEEN EASILY CONVERTED). POSITRACTION WAS OFFERED IN 3 DIFFERENT RATIOS FROM 3:07 TO 4:56 WITH THE LATER BEING POPULAR FOR RACING. THIS CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH THE 283/210 HP. 4V CARB (146 BUILT) AND BLACK SOFT TOP (103 MADE) INSTEAD OF COLORED SOFT TOP. IT IS OPTIONED WITH HEATER, COURTESY LIGHTS, WINDSHIELD WASHERS (2555 MADE), STRAIGHT ORIGINAL AM RADIO, WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES, TWO-TONE PAINT (SILVER COVE, CORRECT # MOTOR AND IT SHOWS MILEAGE OF 70,964 MILES.

IN A CONTINUING TREND OF UPGRADING, THE '57'S BODY FIT AND PANELS WERE IMPROVED YET, WHEN THEY LEFT THE FACTORY, WERE STILL NOT UP TO MODERN STANDARDS. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS, ON THE OTHER HAND, WERE GREATLY IMPROVED WHICH RESULTED IN CORVETTE CONTINUING TO BOLSTER ITS WINNING REPUTATION AT THE RACES..... BOTH AT THE RACE TRACKS NATIONWIDE AND ON THE STREETS OF AMERICA. WITH THE FUEL INJECTED VERSIONS NOW BREAKING THE BANK AT THE AUCTIONS, THESE SMALLER HORSE VERSIONS MAKE A GREAT BUY. THIS PARTICULAR CAR HAS AN INTERESTING HISTORY AS IT WAS HALF OF WHAT BECAME THE B-J AUCTION FAVORITE, NATIONALLY KNOWN AS THE "VIN TWINS". IT WAS ALSO SHOWN, WITH ITS LATE MODEL 'SISTER', AT THE NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM FROM JULY 26 THROUGH OCT. 15, 2006 (SEE PHOTO'S). ON THAT DATE; THE PAIR REPRESENTED THE ONLY TWO CORVETTES EVER BUILT AS A MATCHED SET THROUGH THE NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM AND GENERAL MOTORS. THE TWO WERE SEPARATED WHEN THE SISTER CAR WAS SOLD SEVERAL YEARS AGO AT AUCTION. THEY SUFFER ANXIETY AND VISIT EACH OTHER ONCE A YEAR AT A FAMILY REUNION AT THE CORVETTE MUSEUM (LOL). IF YOUR LOOKING TO RE-LIVE THE PAST, OR FOR AN AFFORDABLE '57 IN THIS UNIQUE BODY STYLE NOW EXISTING IN LIMITED NUMBERS- YOU FOUND IT. REDUCED TO MOVE $79,500
