Description

The Silver Cloud of 1955 continued Rolls-Royces successful tradition of introducing new models that retained already well-developed and refined drivetrains. In this case the new Silver Cloud with its longer, lower chassis, softer suspension and more modern standard factory-built steel coachwork utilized the tried and true 4,887 cc, 155 horsepower F-head inline-six and four-speed automatic transmission. More than competent mechanically, the Silver Cloud was also beautifully proportioned with a pleasing combination of sharp edges and flowing curves. It was one of the finest automobiles of its day, and helped usher Rolls-Royce into a more modern era. Although custom coachwork for the Silver Cloud remained available, it carried a premium that was expensive even by the standards of most Rolls-Royce buyers. Coachbuilt Rolls-Royces from this period are therefore quite rare, and this 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I with exquisite coachwork by Hooper of London is one of them. A right-hand drive example, chassis SWA44 features Hoopers traditional Empress coachwork created by chief designer Osmond Rivers, and is finished in black above the coachline with silver below. The interior is tan leather with beige carpets. It also features full Rolls-Royce hub caps with wide whitewall tires, dual wing mirrors, a Spirit of Ecstasy radiator mascot, rear fender skirts, rear suicide doors, wood fold-out tables in the back of the front seats, a flower vase mounted on the back of the front seat, air conditioning, aftermarket CD player, and is complete with copies of the build sheets. The car was delivered new to Alan S. Roger, Esq. of London on March 2, 1956 by Hooper & Company. Showing just 71,300 miles, this regal automobile has been restored and maintained over the years as needed, and is in very presentable and very attractive condition both inside and out. Only eighteen long wheelbase Silver Cloud Empress Saloons are thought to have been built before Hoopers demise in 1959, so this is both a rare and important automobile that would be a highlight of any tour and a perfect choice for Rolls-Royce Owners Club events thanks to its stunning coachwork. It is a grand, comfortable, gorgeous and exclusive postwar Rolls-Royce that is ready to usher its next owner in the finest grace and luxury of the period.
