Description

1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner for Sale. The Muscle Car Era was in full swing when GTOs, 442s, SS Chevelles, and Mach 1 and Boss Mustangs cruised the streets. They rumbled in and out of A&Ws, White Castle, and local hamburger joints across the country. It was the spot where car guys met and compared cars and their performance at the track and sometimes on the street. It was a simpler time when a production Muscle Car, a full tank of gas, and a few dollars in your pocket was all that was needed to have fun on a Friday or Saturday night! All of the Big Three were competing for their share of a growing market. For years, Dodge and Plymouth were famous for their Super Stock cars and the 413s. In 1966, there came a change from Dodge and Plymouth camp with the introduction of the Street Hemi. It was seen in a limited number of Belvederes and Coronets in 1966. In 1967, two new models hit the street from Mopar. The Dodge Coronet R/T and the Plymouth GTX both with optional Hemi Motors. The stage was set! BAM! 1968 Dodge and Plymouth hit hard with Dodges Scat Pack Group and not to be out done, Plymouth joins forces with Warner Brothers and the Road Runner was born! Car enthusiasts were astonished at this new car hitting the Plymouth dealerships, something never before seen. A true factory prepared Muscle Car with a Cartoon characters name and logo! It was designed as a spartan prepared car. A B body car that came stock with a 383 CI and most often with a 4 speed transmission. A vinyl taxi cab styled bench seat, rubber floor mats, push out rear windows, and factory steel wheels with dog dish hub caps. It was designed to grab the young market and to be QUICK! The Hemi was the ultimate motor to cradle into that engine compartment, and the results were awesome! The 1968 HEMI Road Runner seen here is a very early production, one documented by Galen Govier and in the Chrysler Registry. A two door coupe, 1 of 391 produced with an automatic transmission. Fender tag on the car indicates the following; (RM) Carline a Plymouth Road Runner, (21) Body type 2 dr coupe, (73) Engine 426 2-4BBL, 425 hp V8 Hemi head, (5) Transmission, Torque Flite Automatic, column shift, (4) Tires F70-15 red streak, (123) Scheduled production date, Tuesday, January 23 1968 (Galen believes this could be the first Hemi Road Runner made for 68 because of the early run numbers but it cant be determined for certain) (014532) Shipping order number, (2 5) Moldings, drip rail, (A 4) Ratio 3,23:1 W 8,75 Axle, (X) No sure grip, (TD) Trim Grade, Deluxe, (R 4) Front seat, Vinyl split bench, (P P ) Roof paint Matador red, (N P) Body paint Matador red, (T 1) Paint style Mono-tone, (U B) Upper door frame color, black, (B) Buffed paint, none, (S) Stripe, none, (A 1) Radiator 26 width, (R 1) Radio Music Master AM, (Z 8) Performance hood treatment, (t 7) Export N.C.S. Heres an extremely rare opportunity for a Mopar enthusiast, a Muscle Car enthusiast, or a serious Collector to add an example of one of the greatest production cars from that period to their collection. Considered by many Muscle Car Enthusiasts to be the Premier Muscle Car of the era. Featured in Muscle Car Review and a Multi Show Winner! Simply Awesome!
