Introduced in 1961, the range-topping Mercedes-Benz W112 was sold to the public as the 300SE and was the company’s most modern offering during the early 1960s. While sharing the same platform and fantastic Paul Bracq design as the W111 (220), the W112 was fitted with the smooth, powerful, fuel-injected M189 big-block straight-six and was also equipped with advanced self-leveling pneumatic suspension, power steering and an automatic transmission in addition to more luxurious appointments. Externally, the W112 could be distinguished by significantly more chrome as well as larger 14-inch wheels. The W112 also cost almost twice as much as a 220 SE, and the cars were even shown in separate showrooms. First offered as a sedan, the 300 SE could be had as an attractive cabriolet or elegant coupe from 1962. It was always an exclusive top-shelf car so from 1961 until 1967 production was sparse, just 3,127 in total including both coupes and convertibles. This makes them equally exclusive cars today, and a strong, well-sorted example is highly prized among Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and collectors.
This 1965 Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Coupe, one of just 710 300 SE coupes and convertibles built that year, is a phenomenal example that shows just 68,000 miles. Always a dry, clean Southern car, it has been thoroughly restored to very high standards and to its currently exquisite condition. Finished in silver, it has steel wheels with hub caps and chrome trim rings, wide whitewall tires, a burgundy leather interior and burgundy carpets. It also features rare and correct Behr air conditioning that blows cold, the rare optional four-speed manual transmission and a Becker Europa radio. The leather is fantastic, the interior wood is of concours quality, the trunk is beautifully restored and complete with its jack, the engine bay is attractively detailed and the complicated air suspension is fully sorted and functioning. The 300SE is a rare and complicated and it pays to find a strong, finished, developed and debugged example. This car is ideal as it is a fully functioning and desirably equipped 4-speed 300SE with Behr air conditioning that is in spectacular enough condition to be shown. It is an amazing automobile.
