Some owner notes / history:
1972 VW Super Beetle History
My Father is the original owner – purchased the Super Beetle new in 1972.
Regular maintenance (including under coating) was performed by the VW dealership.
It was his daily driver until approximately 1995.
At that point the vehicle was restored including new paint (OEM color) and engine overhaul.
The odometer was reset with PA approval.
Since that point the beetle has never seen snow and rarely rain. It has been garage kept since at least 1980.
Classic Plates were issued in 2002.
I was given the car in 2004. I have logged approximately 1000-1500 miles since then.
Service past 1000miles:
2007 – New windshield, tires, shocks, struts. Oil changes and state inspections as required.
2011 – Replaced battery.
2012/13 winter – (100 miles ago)
Removed engine and transmission: clean, strip, prime, and repaint all heat shields.
Drain and refill transmission; new pan gasket.
Rebuilt clutch vacuum servo: diaphragm, spring, and seal.
Flush and refill torque converter; replace seal.
Install new clutch disc; lube throw out bearing; adjust to factory specs.
Replaced complete exhaust; including heat exchangers and preheat tubes.
(all pipes are ceramic coated)
Replaced gas tank filler hose, gaskets, and vapor recovery tubing.
Replaced all fuel lines from tank to carburetor; installed high efficiency fuel filter.
(located behind rear driver wheel well, original was located over engine – not
a good idea in many opinions)
Replaced all breather, fresh air, and emissions hoses in engine compartment.
New defroster hoses.
Brakes: new lines and hoses (except line in center tunnel); new brake hardware;
new wheel cylinders(4), new linings (all), Flush, bleed and adjust including
Clean and repack front wheel bearings.
Repack cv joints – rear axles.
Engine tune up:
Rebuilt carburetor; striped and painted oil bath air cleaner; reconditioned filter element; cleaned and adjusted air controls; replaced vacuum lines.
New distributor cap and rotor, condensor, points, wires, plugs.
Adjust valves; install new cover gaskets.
New oil and filter.
New fan belt.
Notes: Parts were purchased for several years proceeding this recent reconditioning. Hence, dates previous to winter 2013. (Time, money, & availability were all factors).
All parts purchased as per OEM, German when available. (Exception was relocation and upgrade of the fuel filter). All work done according to VW specifications using VW service manuals, and appropriate reputable internet forums. All fluids are per VW specifications or new equivalents. Engine is running 30W Castrol and midgrade (plus) gasoline. I use gas treatment to combat the use of ethanol in today’s fuel.
I have a few small miscellaneous spare parts, as well as the service manuals that have served me well over the past years. These and the car cover go with the Super Beetle.
