AS FEATURED IN CLASSIC CARS MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 ISSUE 1960s luxury comes at the price of a family hatchback these days and what superb value cars like this lovely Bentley offer. When it was built in 1967 you could buy two family homes for the £6500 price of a T1 -I know because my parents bought their first home a few months ealier for just over £3000 - and they still feel very special today. The T1 was essentially a Bentley badged version of the 1965 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, but considerably rarer then and now. There were ten Shadows built for every Bentley and a total of just 1702 cars left Crewe with the flying B motif, making them much sought after today. The styling differences are quite minor but have a marked effect on the appearance, giving the Bentley an understated elegance compared to the rather more brash Rolls, especially these earlier and much prettier pre-impact bumper cars. Our car has an intriguing history. The factory build sheet shows it was supplied via H.A Fox to a gentleman whose address was a castle in North Wales. Some time after 1980 it was exported to America, before being repatriated from Florida in 1991. Shortly afterwards it was acquired by an enthusiast in South Wales who would keep the car for over 20 years, during which time the MOT certificates show just over 2500 miles covered, mostly ferrying brides to and from church as part of his wedding hire business. During 1992/3 he carried out a cosmetic restoration and bare metal repspray in the original Tudor Grey metallic, with invoices and a note in the file to say that £15000 was spent on the project. In addition there is a fat file of receipts totalling over £4500 for parts and servicing work. Today the car still presents in immaculate condition. There is hardly a blemish on the gorgeous paintwork and all the chrome gleams. The lovely tan upholstery has just the right amount of patina for the age of the car and the woodwork is in near perfect order. The carpets are all original and protected with overmats and the leather headlining is unmarked. The car retains its original period radio. The engine bay is equally impressive, nicely detailed and showing all the signs of regular maintenance. That extends to the underside, which is rock solid and shows no signs of any restoration. We have just fitted four new tyres. The 6.25 litre V8 fires up first turn of the key every time and soon settles down to a barely audible rumble. Slip it into gear and the four-speed auto box wafts you down the road with barely perceptible changes. The power steering is ultra light as was the RR/Bentley way at the time so you learn to control it with just your fingertips and sink back into the welcoming Connolly hide to enjoy the ride. With everything working as it should and an MOT to January 2015, that is all you have to do. You will have gathered that we are quite smitten with this car - as is everyone who has seen it so far. There is surely no finer way to turn up at any classic car show or event this summer and we will not be in any way disappointed if it stays long enough for us to enjoy it to the full. Sadly I fear it may not...
