Description

Erling Poppe's Sunbeam S7 and S8 are surely among the most interesting and distinctive British motorcycles of the post-war period and they command a strong and loyal following today. Instantly recognisable thanks to their 500cc ohc in-line twin engine and shaft drive, these were over-engineered products of real quality. Our bike will have particular appeal to those who appreciate preserved bikes over shiny restored examples. The tin ware has probably been repainted at some time but the finish on the frame looks original and the seats and fittings have a pleasing patina. First registered in Rotherham in 1953, it has spent most of its life in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire area and has had just six owners in total. It presents today in lovely 'not messed with' condition It has most recently been in a private collection and not used on the road since 2008 but appears in good mechanical order. Despite not having been started for some time, it soon fired into life and rode nicely on our little test track. The engine is smooth and quiet and the gear change is light and positive. The brakes are adequate for the available performance. The Sunbeams were not quick motorcycles in their day and the S8 is a sedate but very comfortable cruiser. It will make a very nice machine for Sunday club outings and, thanks to the superb spares back up from Stewart Engineering, one that should be easy to live with.
