Description

If you like British rarities then this Excelsior is sure to appeal. It is a 1962 Talisman Twin 250cc - one of the very last of the line. The Talisman was introduced in 1950 as a quality two-stroke lightweight twin. Unusually Excelsior did not follow the bulk of the British industry in fitting a proprietary Villiers engine, choosing instead to develop their own 243cc unit. It was of conventional design with a flywheel magneto and it was matched to an Albion four-speed box and single Amal carburettor. The Talisman stayed in production for twelve years, with several different versions along the way, including twin-carb sports models and a larger 328cc Super Talisman. This engine was also used in the Berkeley three-wheelers. Our bike is one of the very last Talismans made, the TT6 model. It comes from an extensive collection of two-stroke machines put together over many years by a now elderly enthusiast. It has not been used on the road for several years but we are told it is in good running order and should be capable of passing its MOT test with just a little fettling. All the tinware is present and in mostly good condition, although there is some repairable damage to the rear guard, while the metallic blue paintwork is presentable. The seat is not original but fits well. A new battery and rectifier come with the bike but have not yet been fitted. With just a little work this rare bike could be out on club runs this summer or it could be an excellent basis for a top quality restoration.
