A rare and fascinating car, manufactured in the USA in 1949, and as far as we can tell, brought to the UK in 1955. Although there has been some recent work, the car is to be sold as an ongoing project, needing considerable renovation, including rust repairs to the underside. Having said that, it starts easily, runs well, and can be driven around our yard. £1,000 worth of re-chroming just completed. UK registered, and last MoT tested in 1997. Could form the basis of a fabulous hotrod project! Chassis No. G440367. Reg No. OKV 609. £6,500. Snippets: The history of this American firm can be traced to 1736 when 3 brothers Peter, Clement & Henry arrived in the USA, they started their trade as “Blacksmiths & Woodworkers” & by the mid 1800s the firm had evolved into making parts for freight wagons & wheelbarrows. By the turn of the century Studebaker were making carriages ranging from Sulkies, broughams, phaetons to a Four-in-Hand which they were charging $20,000 for. At this time they were advertising themselves as “The largest vehicle house in the World”. The company starting working on their first “horseless carriage” as early as 1897 with their electric cars being manufactured from 1902-1911. At the time of WWI the British, Russian & French governments placed substantial orders with Studebaker not just for cars but for transport wagons, ambulances and artillery harnesses including 60,000 saddles. For WWII the firm ceased car production & concentrated on personnel carriers & trucks and returned to automobile design with the motto “First by Far, with a Post-War Car”. In 1967 the Studebaker name disappeared entirely having been absorbed by one of their old rivals – McGraw-Edison.
