1957 Standard 8 Gold Star Saloon In the pantheon of British small cars of the 1950's, the Standard Eight and Ten are overshadowed by their Morris, Austin and Ford rivals, yet they wereworthy and efficient vehicles, whose well considered design responded well to the preoccupations of the market they served. The Eight was a completely new car with unit construction and an overhead valve engine. Only saloon models were made. The new engine of 803cc produced slightly less power than the outgoing larger side valve unit with 26bhp at 4500rpm but this was increased to 30bhp at 5000rpm with this model in 1957. Soon after it was introduced, it was realised that the basic Standard engine was very rugged and could be developed and tuned to produce far more power. The engine was designed by David Eley, who was made an honorary member of the Standard Motor Club in 2006. This new engine unit also had the new four speed gearbox, with synchromesh on the top three ratios, a massive improvement. The above, together with Girling hydraulic brakes went down very well with the motoring public. To keep prices down, the car at launch was very basic with sliding windows, single windscreen wiper and no external boot lid. Access on the early cars was by folding down rear seats, which had the backrest divided in two. The 1954 De-Luxe model had wind up windows and the Gold Star model we have here of 1957 also now had an opening boot lid! From mid 1955 the Eights finally all got wind up windows. At launch the car cost £481 including taxes on the home market undercutting the smaller Austin A30 by £23, and the four door Minor by a massive £80! Press reoprts from the day praised the car's spaciousness, good handling and light controls and, most of all, the new OHV engines fuel efficiency, with over 45 mpg easily achievable. The 1957 Gold Star model we have on offer here is a real joy to drive. Like the early reports mention above, she handles well, the controls are light and she pulls nicley through the gears. The folding rear seat is retained in this model, together with the new openeing boot lid, making this a very versatile little car. The MOT test is valid until August 22nd this year and obviuosly free road tax. Within the cars history folder are a number of previous tax discs an original 'Buff logbook' and numerous invoices for service and improvement work etc. This great Standard Eight is ready for the 2014 show season.
