Former CCCA and CLC national prize winner. One of 12 known to exist. Recently detailed and serviced, ready to show or tour.

The restoration was completed about a decade ago, and it collected all its awards at that time. It was refinished in correct Harbor Mist Gray, which is elegant and sophisticated, exactly right on a senior car like this Cadillac. The car includes restoration photos, and it was obviously a complete, solid car before work started and it was stripped to a bare shell and rebuilt from there. The paint is modern, but the color is pure 1940 without the obviously metallic that often mar the best restorations. Note the wonderful details like the cowl vent just ahead of the passenger’s door, which feeds the fresh air heater/defroster unit, the gorgeous art-deco fender lights, and the restrained use of chrome trim. Of course, it goes without saying that the chrome is show quality throughout showing very few signs of age and the detail on the cast parts is exceptional. There were obviously no corners cut here.

The two-tone blue and cream leather interior is a wonderful change from the expected red or blue, and appears to be this car’s original combination. Expertly rendered using fresh hides and original patterns, it shows a few signs of use (this car has been a favorite tour vehicle for a decade now), but the current condition is a testament to the quality of the materials and workmanship. The wide, narrow band of instruments should be familiar to anyone who loves 1940 Cadillacs and LaSalles, with all the gauges being rebuilt and fully functional today. Even the original AM radio works like it should after giving it a few moments to warm up. Beautiful blue carpets enhance the luxurious feel and the steering wheel looks authentic—we’re having a hard time deciding whether it has been restored or whether it is an exceptional original piece. Overhead there’s a black canvas top trimmed in red leather and thanks to a pair of powerful vacuum cylinders, it stows itself neatly behind the back seat in a few seconds. There’s also a matching black canvas boot and the trunk is detailed with correct fabric and a matching full-sized spare tire.

Cadillac’s 346 cubic inch flathead V8 is smooth, torquey, and makes wonderful eight-cylinder sounds out on the open road, giving this car an appropriate feel from behind the wheel. Fully rebuilt when the car was restored, it starts easily and runs superbly, happily idling in traffic or cruising at 60 MPH all day. The engine bay is highly detailed with correct olive green paint on the block, a big oil bath air cleaner up top, and correct details throughout, from the wiring harness to the hose clamps. The transmission is a column-shifted 3-speed manual driving a set of 3.90 gears out back, so acceleration if smart and it cruises at modern highway speeds without any drama. The chassis was detailed for show when the car was completed, and has recently been re-detailed and serviced, so while it doesn’t look like 100-points anymore, it’s easily still a 90+ point car. Original 16-inch steel wheels were refinished in flashy bright red and are equipped with trim rings, hubcaps, and correct 7.00-16 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires.

Nicely documented and recently serviced, this is an exceptional motorcar that will still show quite well at any event and remains a superlative tour candidate that is always ready to go. This is a no-disappointments car that’s even nicer than it appears in photos.
