1964 Shelby 298 Cobra VIN: CSX 2434 This 1964 Shelby Cobra is one of AC Cars second generation Mark IIs produced from 1963 to 1965. The Ford 289 was new to the Cobra for 1964, and before the introduction of the 427 the 289 was the standard bearer for Cobra in America. The Shelby 289 Cobra dominated the USRRC with only one loss in three years of racing. Billed to Shelby American on 5/6/64, CSX 2434 was shipped to the US on May 15th aboard the SS Alblasserdyk. The 289 Cobra later arrived at Peterson Ford in Encinitas, CA fitted with Class A accessories including WSW tires, a large oil pan, and roll bar. The price was $5780.55, and the car was sold to Henry T. Vance of Boston, MA who purchased the car on a whim during a visit to Southern California. He had the car shipped home to Boston where he kept the car until he sold it on to Victor Myette also of Massachusetts in 1966. Myette used the car as his daily driver, and occasional autocross car until he traded the Cobra in 1969 with about 50,000 miles on the clock. 2434s next owner was Peter Portante of New Britain, CT. After owning the car Portante would go on to become a principal owner of ERA Automobiles, manufactures of Cobra replicas. 2434 would go through a few more short-term owners until arrived at the door of Greg Collus of New York in 1989. He sent the car to Tom Kirkham of Provo, UT for a complete museum quality restoration. The car moved on to the ownership of Hubert Hoffman of Richmond, VA in late 1992. He would own 2434 until his death in 2004 having only covered 40 miles since its restoration. Cobra expert Lynn Park acquired the car from the family in 2004 and sold it on to Skip Atkins of South Pasadena, CA in early 2005. Now in the custody of Canepa we have stripped this immensely original car down for a complete repaint and refinish to a concours quality standard. The original wire wheels are being refurbished and refinished in their original satin silver. Both front and rear bumpers are being restored and reinstalled. All components will be replated. Once finished this Cobra will follow in the show winning tradition of our many Cobra restorations. -
