Older restoration still in good order. Stunning design with many one-year-only features. Flathead V8 with Hydra-Matic transmission makes for an excellent highway cruiser.

This particular 1948 Cadillac is an older restoration that’s still in good order and ideal for driving and casual shows. The black paint has a lovely patina that should not be confused with deterioration, but rather the use of materials other than modern two-stage urethane for the finish. The steel underneath is straight and quite well prepped, as there are no wrinkles or waves in the surfaces, which is especially critical on a black car. Yes, there’s plenty of chrome, all of it in good to very good condition, with straight stainless that can be buffed to a high shine and excellent cloisonné emblems with bright colors.

The tan leather interior shows signs of use, of course, because a sunny day and this convertible are nigh impossible to resist. The door panels are button-tufted fabric with body-colored sills, while the seats use pleated leather for a more traditional look. The 1948 Cadillac’s instrument panel was a one-year-only feature due to its complexity (and therefore expense), but it’s one of the items that make the 1948s so special for collectors. Correct carpets were fitted and perhaps are where most of the wear is evident with some shrinkage visible around the edges. The instruments are all fully functional and this car is equipped with an optional AM radio and antenna, heater and defroster, and the innovative Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. The tan canvas top is newer and looks fantastic, using a plastic rear window in place of the original canvas curtain with small glass rear window. The trunk is also finished with brown carpets and carries a full-sized spare tire.

During the war, Cadillac’s 346 cubic inch flathead V8 and 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission were used in tanks, and the lessons learned in combat directly translated to a better product on the road. Rebuilt at the time of restoration, the engine runs superbly and powers the gorgeous convertible at modern speeds without apparent strain or effort. It is no longer detailed for show, but extensive recent maintenance means that it’s in top mechanical condition and ready to enjoy next summer. The olive green paint on the block looks correct and the exhaust manifolds still show shiny black porcelain. A correct 2-barrel carburetor and air cleaner look right under the pointed hood, and even on warm days, it keeps its cool thanks to a massive radiator. New shocks and new kingpins have been installed.

The 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic really is the transmission you want in your ‘40s Cadillac. Shifts are positive and not as smooth as a modern transmission, but I’ve always found the positive engagement of each gear reassuring and you know the hardware is working correctly. 3.36 gears in the rear end mean that this Cadillac will cruise effortlessly at 70 MPH all day, making it a truly modern machine in operation. Braking is powerful and the unassisted steering (power steering was still several years away) still feels sharp and responsive without excessive effort. “Sombrero” hubcaps are wrapped in wide whitewall tires to complete this flashy ragtop, and it’s truly spectacular to see in person.

Prices are on the move for these post-war convertibles, so now is the time to get yours. This one isn’t perfect, but if you simply want to drive instead of owing a piece of static garage art, this Series 62 convertible is a fantastic choice.
