The Merlin was an entirely new model introduced late in 1935, with the intention of replacing the long-established 9hp Monaco. This new model boasted ‘aerolined’ styling (to use Riley’s description) with the coachwork of all steel construction. Priced at £269, the Merlin was a well appointed car in true Riley tradition. Preselector transmission was a standard feature, as was automatic chassis lubrication and a sunshine roof. Further new features were the open propshaft, replacing the long-favoured torque tube and the Girling brake system. First registered in December 1935, this example is one of the earliest surviving Merlins - chassis number 66M548. A very original car, it has been in single ownership for the past 55 years, during which time it has been carefully maintained with much work undertaken by specialists Blue Diamond Services. With the exception of the front seats which were retrimmed several years ago, the interior remains original and nicely mellowed. Mechanically, the car is very good in all respects and drives very well. A substantial file of documentation is supplied, showing much money to have been spent keeping the car in good running order. There are also a number of hand-written notes, plus a copy of the Driver’s Handbook. The car retains the original Northampton registration number. Riley saloon models in such unmolested condition are becoming very hard to find nowadays – this Merlin is certainly one of the most genuine we have seen for some while. For more information please call me. We are located south of the Hindhead Tunnel (A3) between Petersfield and Alton. Viewing by prior appointment please. Delivery can be arranged at very competitive rates.
