1987 Porsche 959 Canepa Gen One VIN: WP0ZZZ95ZJS900105 Canepa Generation I upgrade 600 horsepower - 540 ft/lbs of torque California Smog Legal Canpea 959S suspension with titanium coil-over springs and Bilstein gas struts Canepa upgraded headlights and wheels The all-wheel-drive Porsche 959 was by far the most technologically advanced sports car of its day, and only 288 were produced from 1987-1988. The timeless styling, state-of-the-art systems, and superior driving characteristics make it one of the greatest automobiles ever built. Having never officially been sold in the US, the 959 needed some assistance working it way through the various federal and state bureaucracies. Canepa was instrumental in the passing of the Show and Display legislation that allowed the 959 to be driven legally in the United States. Canepa then played a pivotal role in modifying the 959 to meet EPA and California emissions standards, but meeting these emissions standards would take a toll on performance. In response Canepa engineers, along with direct support from the Porsche factory, undertook a program to increase power output to the level Porsche had planned for the car had it continued production. This car, number 105, is the result of those efforts. A 4,562-mile car when it was imported to the US in 2006, it was shipped directly to Canepa where it immediately received the Canepa Generation I conversion at a cost of over $100,000. Our first generation 959 modifications included a new sequential engine management system, Garrett AiResearch twin turbos, an upgraded fuel system, and a redesigned stainless exhaust with Porsche-specific catalytic converters. The suspension in these Generation I cars was upgraded to 959S specifications, including the installation of titanium coil-over springs and Bilstein gas struts updated with the latest valving technology. In addition, the factory alloy wheels were modified to accommodate modern Michelin Pilot Sport low profile, speed-rated tires, and coated with a proprietary Canepa finish. After receiving their EPA/CARB certification the Canepa Generation I cars were good for 600 horsepower, and are California smog legal. In addition to the Gen I work this car also received the Canepa HID headlamp conversion, a Porsche Werks I steering wheel, a US 220 mph speedometer, and custom floor mats. While with Canepa this 959 underwent all of the service and mechanical upgrades developed by Canepa in conjunction with Porsche AG. This included over $150,000 worth of improvements to the A/C system, heater, water pump, oil pump, fuel system, electrical, battery, and brake pads. The 959 has covered only 1900 miles since the conversion and upgrades were completed. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the worlds great supercars. Ideally suited for the kind of collector that enjoys driving, it combines the comfort of a world-class touring coupe with absolutely jaw-dropping performance. Stunning in its factory special order Schwarz Metallic paint with graphite leather interior, it has been concours detailed, and is ready now for show or high-speed touring. But as with all limited-run supercars, development was abbreviated to the point of non-existence. Porsche had plans for the future of the 959, and Canepa has collaborated with the factory to develop the cars to the level that would have been achieved had the 959 stayed in production. Here at Canepa we have been working on these marvels for over 20 years, and understand their massive potential and limited shortcomings better than anyone. -
