1969 Mercedes 280SL—The “Pagoda” Series
The 280SL was the final—and best—chapter in the remarkable 200SL-series, and this largely unrestored but well-maintained car is a fine example of what made that series a classic.
• A nice repaint in the original blue finish
• 94,503 miles, believed to be original
• Automatic transmission
• Air conditioning that works
• Both tops
A Wonderful Example!
• Paint and Chrome
This SL’s paint was redone in its original blue a number of years ago and still looks fresh. It has a deep shine and strong color.
The chrome is in very good condition and nicely compliments the paint.
The pagoda hard top’s paint (same blue as body) is in very nice condition, and the headliner is in good condition with some slight staining. Likewise, the tan convertible top is in excellent condition with slight staining behind the front windows.
The body and underside of the car appear to be free of rust and corrosion.
The seat upholstery is tan in color and appears original to the car. Due to its signs of aging, the owner has installed a matching set of sheepskins. The door panels are in original matching condition. The original carpeting is blue.
The wood trim on the interior is in good condition but there are a few cracks on the vinyl covering above the instrument pod.
The instrument cluster and the rest of the interior looks very nice.
The car’s 2.8 liter engine starts and runs at it should. It has plenty of power to pull this car along briskly at modern highway speeds.
The transmission is an automatic and it shifts properly. The automatic transmission makes this car is a pleasure to drive both around town and on longer trips.
• Comfort and Safety Systems
This 280SL has air conditioning that functions correctly and makes it a pleasure to drive even on the hottest of days. In that regard, this Mercedes is truly a 4-season car, equally comfortable with the convertible top down or the pagoda hardtop installed.
It is also a car where everything works—horn, lights, wipers, Becker radio—even the clock works. The mark of a great Mercedes!
These 280 SLs were equipped with power-assisted steering and power front disc brakes and rear drums. The car stops straight and true.
A Very Nice Example of one of Mercedes Most Sought-after Sports Cars
Finding a largely original example of the very popular 280 SL series is a rare event. These cars are highly in demand and therefore represent not just a great driving experience but a sound investment as well. And if there was ever a sports car that made you feel as if you are driving on the Autobahn, this 280 SL is it! And of all the sports cars with removable hardtops, there is no—repeat no—car that we know of with greater visibility when the hardtop is installed. Remember: you can’t take your CDs or stocks/bonds for a weekend drive or to a car show, and even if they may be blue chips, they will never take the blue ribbon or gold trophy—or put a grin on your face.
