Description

Year : 1956 Make : Bentley Model : S1 Continental Coachbuilder : Park Ward Body Type : Coupe Colour : Black Trim : St James Red Leather History : The tremendous success Bentley enjoyed with the R Type Continental continued onto the S Series chassis in late 1955 with a range of new bodies available to collectors. The Park Ward fixed head coupe was originally the brain child of legendary coachwork designer John Blatchley who had been largely responsible for the styling of the R Type Continental by H.J. Mulliner. Six R Type Continental chassis were delivered to the Park Ward works who were then owned by Rolls-Royce. Blatchley was given the task of styling the four drophead coupes and the two further fixed head coupes on the R Type Continental chassis, a design which was later slightly adapted for the marginally longer S1 Continental chassis. Chassis No BC57BG was delivered new in December of 1956 to its first owner, Mme Laumers Jacqmotte of Belgium before finding its way to the United States later on in life. It was purchased in August of 1994 by a collector from London based Bentley specialist Peter Fischer. A couple of years later the owner instructed Mr Fischer’s mechanics to overhaul the engine. Although this took place some years ago the car has travelled so few miles since the overhaul that the mechanical aspects are still performing with distinction. Frank Dale & Stepsons recently acquired this motor car in 2008 following this ownership, finished at that time in silver sand over coffee bean, with a dark brown leather interior. Over the past few years Chassis No BC57BG has been restored with the work including but not limited to a bare metal re-paint in black, a new interior in St James red leather and Wilton fire glow carpets, mechanical and electrical works, including a re-wire with a new loom. All of the exterior chrome has been re-plated, colour coded seat belts with chrome buckles and clasps have been fitted along with air conditioning. Most recently a sports exhaust system has been fitted, making the exhaust note reminiscent of an R Type Continental. Chassis No BC57BG is one of just sixty six right hand drive all aluminium examples bodied by Park Ward on the S1 Continental chassis, fitted with the arguably more attractive smaller rear windshield, with larger C posts, giving the motor car a more attractive side profile and overall appearance than the later “wrap around rear window” variants. It also benefits from the S1 Continental mechanical upgrades in the form of power steering, the larger 8:1 compression carburettors and the dual braking system, all of which were original fittings at this time. It comes complete with documentation detailing the restoration works and all of its tools, stowed in the usual location in the boot. A striking example finished in one of the most attractive colour schemes, this beautiful S1 Continental will undoubtedly provide the next fortunate owner with a great deal of motoring pleasure as well as possible financial appreciation. Condition : Very good condition throughout. Technical Data : Four speed automatic gearbox, power steering, 6 cylinder in-line configuration engine, 4.9 litres displacement, 4887cc capacity. Drum brakes servo-assisted. FOR MORE PHOTOS AND INFORMATION PLEASE GO TO WWW.FRANKDALE.COM
