Restored cars are all well and good but for us nothing beats a well preserved original and this lovely split-screen Morris is one of the most unmolested examples we have seen. It is a 1956 Series II four-door Deluxe saloon, in Sandy Beige with maroon interior, that has for the last seven years been part of a small wedding hire fleet. As a result it has wanted for nothing in terms of maintenance, with bills in the file for repairs and upgrades totalling over £5000. Work done includes an unleaded head conversion for the 803cc A-series engine, rebuilt gearbox and clutch, full brake overhaul and servo upgrade, halogen lights, new water pump and electronic ignition. The original trafficator signals remain but have been augmented with flashing indicators for added safety. The car appears to have had only five previous owners and the indicated mileage of 56,000 may well be correct and is supported by bills and MOT certificates back to the 1970s. It has a Heritage Certificate showing that it was delivered to Morris Garages, Oxford in January 1956 and MBL 656 is the original Berkshire registration. The paintwork looks to have been on the car a long time and is in remarkably good order, with the expected minor marks and blemishes of age. The chrome is also very tidy. The car's star feature however is its gorgeous original interior, especially the leather seats which have that character only age can bring. It retains its correct original steering wheel and discreet additions include seat belts front and rear, a quality period radio and auxiliary temperature gauge and ammeter. Structurally, the car is in extremely solid condition throughout. Examples of the care it has received include rear spring leather gaiters and the body an underside have been extensively protected against rust. The engine is a very sweet runner and the rebuilt gearbox just about the best I can recall on a Minor. Power is modest from this the smallest of the A-series lumps but low gearing gives it a brisk feel off the line and the brake improvements inspire confidence. The legendary Minor steering is as good as ever and it is a lovely drive around the Wiltshire lanes. It is hard to think that this endearing little car is approaching 60 years of age and it feels capable of 60 more.
