As any Darracq aficionado will know the evolution of the business which Alexandre Darracq first opened in 1896 is complex to say the least, however according to Georgano’s excellent encyclopaedia the first real Darracq was this 6 ½ hp single cylinder model which was introduced in France in 1900 then in England in 1901where they were sold for £250. Given that is the case this VCC dated example (which is car number 686) must be one of the earliest surviving true Darracqs. The car, which was at one stage owned by Brighton Run sponsors Tindle Newsapapers, is in very good all round condition and is smartly presented though I am happy to report that it does exhibit a few signs of being used which I think is preferable to being just being taken out once a year for the Brighton Run - cars which are used tend to perform better and more reliably than those which rarely come out - in addition there are several bills on file which indicate that it has been properly looked after. I should tell you that the current owner (who admits to not being as agile as he once was) has had the body professionally modified to ease access to the front seat but he has had it done in such a way that it is totally reversible if you want it to return it to its original configuration – I have to say that if he hadn’t told me it had been altered I would never have guessed. The engine starts very readily and pulls well and like any veteran its performance definitely gets better as it warms up. The three speed and reverse gearbox works well and neither it nor the rest of the mechanicals make any undue noises. The car rides well, the steering is positive and although braking requires a little bit of forward planning as you might expect on a very early car you can easily slow it down by backing off the throttle and retarding the ignition so you rapidly gain confidence and start to enjoy driving it So, here is a rare and very attractive single cylinder four seat veteran car which looks good, goes well and has the added benefit of being an early starter on the Brighton Run and it is of course eligible for just about every veteran car event you can think of. Furthermore as it is fairly small you won’t need a big four wheel drive with a large trailer to take it there and it won’t take up much space in your garage!
