Nice largely original car with one older repaint still in good order. Nice-running 440 big block, beautiful blue brocade cloth interior. Solid, handsome car that represents Chrysler’s top-of-the-line.

This car is largely original and in good condition, save for a single repaint many years ago in a very appropriate-looking dark blue that was likely taken from the 1967 Chrysler color chart. In fact, it takes very close inspection that this car has enjoyed a repaint, suggesting quality workmanship and extensive disassembly prior to the color change. Recently removed from long-term storage, there are a few signs of wear and age, but given the mileage and the passage of four-and-a-half decades, it’s quite nice. All four doors fit well and there’s no sign that it’s ever been hit, so both the trunk and the hood sit flush with the bodywork. Those massive quarter panels are straight with no waves or ripples and I find the angular bodywork quite appealing. The black vinyl top is quite likely original and in outstanding condition with no popped seams or signs of rust underneath, which can be the biggest issue with vinyl coverings. All the chrome is good to excellent, with bumpers that haven’t been exposed to winter salt and those full-width taillights are simply awesome.

The gorgeous blue brocade cloth interior is perhaps the car’s highlight, offering an amazing glimpse into the ‘60s and their vision of luxury. The split front bench offers power assist for the driver and separate center armrests for comfort. The upholstery is beautifully finished with leather bindings and cloth seating surfaces, all of which are in excellent condition and showing minimal wear. In this car, the gauge faces show a few signs of age and the wood on the driver’s door is a bit faded, but otherwise the interior is in great condition.

For horsepower and torque to move this big land yacht, Chrysler turned to their bulletproof 440 cubic inch big block V8. With 350 horsepower and a towering 480 pounds of torque, it’s certainly up to the task, and thanks to the all-new lightweight (relatively, anyway) unit-body construction, few luxury cars could keep pace with the Imperial. It’s unlikely that the engine has ever been out of the car, but it recently had a major service that included a renewed gas tank, fuel pump, and freshened Holley carburetor, plus a clean cooling system and brake service that includes a new master cylinder. The engine bay isn’t detailed, but it shows no signs of trouble and that’s factory-issued Chrysler Turquoise enamel on the engine itself. It starts easily and runs quite well, and as muscle car fans already know, the 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic behind it is virtually bulletproof. Out back, highway-friendly 2.93 gears make this a great long-distance cruiser, particularly with that incomparable Chrysler torsion bar ride.

The chassis shows signs of age and mileage, but it was likely undercoated when it was new so there are no major rust issues beyond surface scale on the major cast iron components. Critical areas like the rocker panels and boxed sections under the doors are in excellent condition and the rear quarters around the fender skirts are solid. There’s a recent exhaust system that sounds right, with just the right amount of hushed muscle in its tone. The tires are vintage Michelin radials (when was the last time you even saw size 230-15?) so we would recommend replacement before putting this car into regular service.

Not a perfect car, but a nice, usable older luxury car that presents quite well and offers a lot of performance. For Chrysler fans, the Imperial remains an icon, and this sleek hardtop sedan is the epitome of late-60s style. And you certainly can’t get more sheetmetal for your dollar than this!
