1974 Super Beetle with factory metal sunroof. Restored to better than driver condition - ’05 to ’09. Super clean and a truly fun car.
Engine: 1968 1500cc motor. Oil leak and heads repaired by prior owner in ’04 (though it still spots, but what Beetle doesn’t). I replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil, starter (new Bosch), battery (Interstate), fuel line to tank, all filters, both motor mounts, tar board, muffler and rebuild the carburetor. Motor runs excellent – catches within seconds and spins like a top.
Gearbox: Prior owner replaced clutch, pressure plate and bearing in ’04. Very few miles on it since then - maybe 1000 miles. I replaced shift linkage coupler, plastic sleeve and transmission mount. Super smooth shifts – like it was brand new.
Body: All original VW fenders on the cars. I replaced front valance, rear valance, and full floor pans with sheet metal from Vee Village. Pans welded in and coated with POR-15. Body smoothed with high quality Evercoat super smooth filler, and hand sanded (only to bare metal when needed). Driver quality paint job. Polished smooth with Porter Cable polisher. Looks fantastic and gets great compliments wherever it goes. New seals on all fenders and windows. New wiper blades, aluminum running boards and chrome trim. Car has a few small chips in paint, and one slight dent in front valance. All have been touched up. Replaced door hinge pins, both door shut with ease which is absolutely a beautiful thing on a VW.
Chassis: Prior owner replaced both front struts with gas units. Front-end rides great, easy to steer. No Super-beetle shimmy to speak of.
Brakes: Disc breaks on the front (Varga 2-pin calipers). I replaced pads on front, shoes on rear, and wheel cylinders and hard-ware kit on the rear in ’13. Both rear drums have working adjusters. Car stops great, great pedal feel.
Wheels/Tires: Original dealer option magnesium “Turtle-back” wheels polished to near-chrome shine. Original lugs as well. Tires used, but in solid condition.
Interior: I replaced front/back seat foam, front/back seat covers, front/back door panels, carpet, headliner, speedometer, and dash cover. All TMI interior parts. All black with pepper grey carpet, and Iron Cross floor mats. Older CD player that works and a good set of 6x9 speakers and carpeted boxes.
Sunroof: Cables have been replaced, but still looking for an original gear to turn them. Aftermarket gears are too small.
Most everything works on the car but the following: sunroof, drivers side heater cable, horn (fixed on 11/03/2013), window washer.
Car was originally from Georgia which is why it had so little rust. Car was originally gold – possibly a Sun Bug. This is a very fun car that I've enjoyed restoring and driving, but it’s time to move on to my next project.
Possible trades: Anything foreign or domestic with four wheels built before 1972.
