Registration Number: French Registered Chassis Number: 812051111 The Appia was a car introduced in 1953 as a replacement for the Ardea and was in production for 10 years. It was the last in a long line of Lancia production cars dating back to the Lambda (introduced in 1922) to use the famous sliding pillar suspension. All three series produced had a V4 engine of 1089 cc. In addition to the saloons, a number of special bodied Appias were produced, including a Coupe by Pininfarina, a convertible and Coupe Lusso by Vignale and aluminum bodied GT by Zagato The Appia was renowned for its high quality and simple engineering refinement, which helped it gain a deserved reputation for reliability and longevity. Often overlooked by classic car enthusiasts (and the press) in favor of its more prestigious stable mates the Aurelia and Flaminia, those who own and run these cars know that they are equally deserving of recognition and preservation. Three series of Appia were built: the1st series, produced between 1953 and 1956 were all saloons built in a similar style to the Aurelia. The 2nd series, produced between 1956 and 1959, had a longer wheelbase, different boot and higher engine power and a sportier 2-door version was also available. The 3rd series, produced between 1959 and 1963, featured a new front end with new horizontal grille and lower bonnet line and more engine power. The Appia Zagato, like the car we have here today, was made in about 750 examples and was introduced at the Geneva car show in 1958 and designed by the young up and coming designer Ercole Spada, who went on to design the Alfa TZ1, the Aston Martin DB4 Zagato and last but not least.. the Fiat Tipo... The car we have here is the rarest of the three series of Appia Zagatos. The Appia Sport Passo Corto or sport short wheel base. Made in 200 examples only and a few were also in competition specification. This car, chassis number 812051111 is in current competition spec. And comes with a whole host of spare parts which will be specified individually and can be requested from Coys staff at the auction venue.
