Description

It has been a while since a Mk2 Jaguar graced the showroom but this handsome car was worth the wait. It is the most sought after specification - a 3.8 manual with overdrive and wire wheels - and comes with an astonishingly detailed and interesting history. Built in April 1967 as a right-hand drive 2.4 litre model, it was sold to a buyer in America via Henlys of London. The current owner repatriated the car in 1991 along with an XK140. The latter car had a 3.8 engine fitted and its original 3.4 as a spare so the decision was made to return that one to factory spec and use the 3.8 in the Mk2. That was the start of a four year restoration process, every part of which is documented and photographed. The bodywork was well preserved thanks to dry state origins and all necessary repairs were carried out using Martin Robey panels and correct lead loading techniques. Waxoyl was injected into all the cavities. It was then painted in seven coats of Indigo Blue two-pack paint by Post-War Cars of Cumbria. All the brightwork was rechromed. The interior was completely retrimmed using an Aldridge Trimming kit in Saville Grey. and all the woodwork was refinished. Mechanically, the car was rebuilt from front to back. The engine had a reground crank and new bearings, lightened flywheel, timing chains and piston rings. An all-synchromesh gearbox is fitted, along with a power steering conversion and Coopercraft brakes. Lumenition ignition and a stainless exhaust system are other highlights from a list of work that extends to two closely typed pages. The summary of costs comes to a total of over 24,000. The mileage was reset to zero on putting the car back on the road at the end of 1994. It now reads just over 8000 miles. When not in use the car is stored in a Carcoon. It has seen little use in the last two years as the owner has now embarked on the restoration of the XK140. However it passed the MOT test this week without issue, save for a sluggish windscreen washer pump. Even after nearly 20 years, the car still presents really well and it remains in superb structural order. There are obviously some signs of age and use to the paint and chrome but it is still a fine looking car. It is also a delight to drive with all the famous 3.8 power and a smooth gearbox. The power steering makes for relaxed town driving and the uprated brakes are well up to the job. Buying a Mk2 can be a minefield but the condition and provenance of this car should give real peace of mind. We think it is exceptional value in today's market.
