Quality and rarity combine in this delightful post-war drophead coupe by Lanchester. The new Fourteen models were announced at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show for the 1952 season. Alongside the saloon, the company displayed a prototype coachbuilt drophead by Carbodies, with electro-hydraulic three-position hood. Although a brochure was released, it is believed that no further cars were produced. Two have since been built using period parts to the original design, of which this is one. It was constructed from a bare chassis in 2003 by the eminent Lanchester historian Chris Clark ( using a saloon as the donor car. It is finished in pale blue with red interior, one of several colour schemes listed in the brochure. Both the saloon and drophead featured a 1968cc ohv four-cylinder engine, breathing through a single Zenith carburettor and linked to sister company Daimler's fluid flywheel and four-speed pre-selector gearbox. The quoted power output was 60 bhp at 4200 rpm. The chassis had all new independent front suspension, with torsion bar springs. Little is known of our car's early history, although old MOTs and insurance certificates show that it was on the road in the mid sixties. It has been in regular use since the conversion. The car is still in very attractive condition, although it has picked up some marks and scuffs to the paintwork over the last decade. The interior is mostly original and in lovely patinated order. The woodwork was not refinished at the time of restoration - it is sound but the new owner may want to have it polished. The hood is aged and faded but intact and usable. Mechanically the car appears in good health. The engine starts easily and pulls well and the transmission is in good working order. Pre-selector boxes are a delight to use once mastered and the car can maintain good progress. This is a very rare family sized tourer that will stand out from the crowd wherever it goes. There is scope for detailing and cosmetic improvement but the hard work has been done and it should be a rewarding car to own and drive. As a full 4/5 seater convertible it would make an ideal family classic and a very unusual exhibit at any show.
